Differences in MMI on 2011 Q5?
Is the MMI on the 2011 Q5 the 3G version? Are there any differences in functionality between the versions on the Q5 2.0T Premium Plus without navigation versus those with navigation (other than the obvious - navigation, DVD player, voice control, back-up camera/assist)?
I am planning to purchase the Q5, but can't justify $3200 for a navigation system when I can buy a top-of-the-line Garmin for $400 or less. I don't need a DVD player that doesn't function while driving (and no rear seat video screens), or a backup camera. So I want to know if I am giving up anything else by not selecting this option.
p.s. I know the non-nav version has the controller in the less-convenient centre stack position intead of the logical console position, which the nav version has. Why would Audi do this rather than having all versions in the same position?

From what I know, no difference whatsoever.
DVD player does function while driving with a simple vag-com mod of course this is not very safe.
You also get front parking sensor but there is a lot more, read below.

Re: Differences in MMI on 2011 Q5?
I read the thread you refer to, but it didn't provide the answers I am looking for. I know the virtues of a good navigation system, and the Garmin 3790 provides all that I need. I have seen the system for the 2011 Q5 referred to as MMI Navigation Plus, so I was wondering if there was some additional functionality (or does the plus simply refer to the DVD player, voice control, back-up camera/assist)?
The Audi website is shockingly deficient in providing details on the vehicle. At no point can one discover that without navigation, there actually is an MMI system present. Without acknowledging the system, there is obviously no detail on what it does encompass. Some posts have suggested that the screen is marginally larger (7" vs. 6.5") with the nav option on the 2011 Q5, but I have seen no confirmation of this.
I was under the impression that the 2011 Q5 had both front and rear parking sensors.

It's just a different terminology, no difference between 2011 MMI3 and 2010 or 2009.
With Navigation MMI3 you get 7" inch with the ***** down at the bottom. With out Navi, you get MMI2, 6.5" with the ***** below the CD player.
Only other difference is the Driver Information System is color with MMI3, with MMI2 is all red color.
With Navi you get breathtaking graphics, 3D, traffic integration, 2 SD card slots, on board Hard Drive (40GB), front sensors, rear camera and lots of little things I can't think of. Is it worth the money absolutely IMO. I used to have Garmins in the past but nothing compares to a built in Navi.

Ahhh... so there is a significant difference. I'm not sure what the other changes are between MMI2 and MMI3, but the non-nav version is the previous generation. Does this mean a difference in functionality on the non-nav related functions?

I've never used MMI2 Nav before so I will let someone else answer that. I can tell you that MMI3 Nav uses G-force graphics card with a very fast chip for smooth graphic transition plus 3D maps (3D buildings in major city core areas).

I think I'm getting somewhere. It seems that if one doesn't have the Nav, then one doesn't have MMI at all! So it is not a case of having MMI 2G on the non-nav Q5, it is that the screen, controller, etc. are not considered to be MMI at all.

Re: Differences in MMI on 2011 Q5?
I found the details over at AudiEnthusiasts.com. They have the Audi Infotainment Guide in the Downloads section.
It identifies that the Q5 has the Generation III (G3) Symphony III Radio or the MMI 3G with navigation.
However, on another page it suggests that there is something called MMI Basic Plus, which has a 6.5” monochrome screen, 4x button operating unit, but no navigation. It does not identify which Audi models have this.
So maybe I was wrong in my last post to suggest that non-nav Q5's do not have MMI at all. Does anyone here have a non-nav Q5? How is the system described in your user manual?
