Default Audi Cargo box for Q5

Hello all,

Been a while since last post but I must say I am still enjoying my 2011 Q5 (got in Jan 2011) with about 24,000km and no problem so far.

Question about the Audi roof box.

According to the Audi accessories catalogue, 3 types of roof box are avalaible for the Q5.

The Ski and Luggage with about 447L (15.8ft3) capacity measuring 87''L x 25''W;
the Compact Cargo box 447L (15.8ft3) capacity measuring 81''L x 30''W x 15''H
and
the Small Cargo box 368L (13ft3) capacity measuring 55''L x 35''W x 14''H

I borough my next door neighboor Thule Galaxy model for last weekend and that model is too long for the rear hatch to fully open without hitting the cargo box.

Does anybody know if the Audi Ski & Luggage (87''L) or the Compact Cargo 81''L has the same issue or if I can fully open the hatch with 1 of these models on the roof?

It looks like the Small cargo box allows the hatch to fully open but not sure about the other 2
Thanks

Marc

I have no experience with the cargo boxes, but wanted to remind you that you can adjust the height to which the back hatch opens quite easily. If you could put up with reduced head clearance, you might be able to stop it from hitting any cargo box.

That's what I have been doing whole weekend.
Stop the hatch before it hits the cargo box. crawl under the half open hatch to get the heavy cooler and luggage in an out of the trunk.

And if you want to open the hatch whille the engine is running, you need to use the driver side door button and get out of the car, run to the back and hit the hatch closing button before it is too late.

Do not remember if there is a way to store in memory the opening position of the hatch such that you do not have to manually stop it everytime you open it.

I have check the Thule Cargo box and some model allows you to position the cargo box more toward the front to clear the hatch. The Boxter 611, the Atlantis models and the Accent ones from Thule allow you to do so.

Would prefer the Audi model but not a lot of detail I could find on the net

There are online fit guides for both Yakima and Thule for the Q5. These should help. If not go down to your local Rack/box dealer and get their help.
