TT importation _ question re bumpers

Re: TT importation _ question re bumpers
A bit of an update to my 2006 Special Edition Roadster situation. Several web sites refer to it having "Front and Rear Body color 5-MPH Impact-Absorbing Bumpers" as standard. I see this on other Audi's but unfortunately not other TT models -accept the same model coupe. My math is 5 MPH = 8 KMH; I believe.
Audi has come back to me stating I need the bumper modification similiar to the one described by Cargenelle I think I am just getting the standard reply .They also will not send me their specs on my model. It is official: this bumper stipulation is now made me certifiably insane!

Re: TT importation _ question re bumpers
Hey folks........ just wanted to say a big thanks to everybody who contributed to this thread!!! I have been searching for a discussion like this for months regarding the Bumper issues for the TT and have been looking for the exact answers that you kindly provided in your informative discussion. I am planning on purchasing an 02 or 03 TT this spring and will now re-consider my desire to import a US car and look for a well priced Canadian car to avoid all the hassles. There is a lot of misinformation out there but I feel we have found the truth in this thread!
One last question for those of you who did import - do you still fell it was worth the work/frustration and how much do you feel you saved over all on the process by getting a US car. I know the savings appear substantial but with all the hidden costs and red tape - is it really worth it and would you do it again? (respectfully submitted)
Thanks again....great discussion!!

Re: TT importation _ question re bumpers
I just recently imported an 04 TT quattro with 80,000 kms for just under 20,000. The mods ran at about 3700 and I imported thru a carrier at 1400. The taxes and duty I would have had to pay regardless of where I purchased........so overall, I do believe we're still getting a pretty good deal. I'm not sure what they would run at if I was to purchase locally, but I would guess at over 40 g. Keep in mind that you can still sell the old bumpies on ebay and return some of the modification costs. Once you are aware of the process or can have someone walk you through it, it isn't as frustrating as it sounds. RIV was good about offering an extension on the timeline for mods. I'm not sure that everyone would feel the same about this process....but I feel I'm further ahead - it's a great car!!

Re: TT importation _ question re bumpers
I had my 05 tt 225 for sale recently, no bites at all, was asking 37500, reduced down to 32500, still no sale
I tried to trade it in and all I could get was 22000
I have now decided to keep it.
Anyway my point is a CDN 04 TT would have a similar value to a US car when you factor in all the required mods, bumpers 3-5K, 6.1% duty, speedo change to km
That would be roughly 4.5 - 6k on top of your 20 you paid. 24.5 - 26K total. then you have to factor resale, a US car will always be less desirable to a CDN model
I'm sure if you look hard enough you could find a CDN car in that area.
I would steer away from a US TT unless it was half price, just my two cents

Re: TT importation _ question re bumpers
As Full Sun said this story in the globe - Transport Canada considering less stringent bumper rules - may be really good news for those of us still considering importing a TT from the US Market. Anyone thinking of doing so may want to wait till summer and potentially save thousands on the mods!!
I need two more posts to post the URL so bear with me please.

Re: TT importation _ question re bumpers
Great article....thank you Caper TT. Makes you wonder who comes up with these rules in the first place, doesn't it? Let's hope that our dollar remains strong - I want to see more TT's cruising about.
