front end noise .. opinions ?
hey ..
i have a 1992 audi 100cs ... i have been getting this roaring noise in the front end of the car almost like a vibration roar sound of a wheel bearing ... but apparently it has been replaced a few months ago so im wondering if anyone has heard of the bearings for the front diff in the trans going bad ?? are they bathed in the fluid with the trans ? or are the gears for the front diff in gear oil sep front the transmission that needs to be changed ? ... im more inclined to think its the wheel bearing .. but the guy i bought the car off said he had it replaced and i have a recipt saying so ... its an odd problem ... and there is no play in the tire or anything ... i am a pretty competent mechanic and have worked on and built a lot of cars so i have did all the tests to check the wheel bearing and i dont want to replace it to find out its not gone and its the trans ... or the axle ??? anyone ever run into this ?
im new to the audi world so im still full of questions : ) hope you all dont mind ..

Does it change with engine speed or road speed. And does loading it left or right make it worse or go away?
Also...not too familiar with that model, but what type of bearing is it? And why was only one done and not the pair?

it gets worst with speed and does not make a sound at all when below 30ish ..
it never goes away when it starts at speed and it will get a little worst with changing direction ... but it seems to be getting agressively worst every day ... very fast for a wheel bearing ... it is the same bearing as in any of the a4 (b5) with the 2.8l 12v and passats and 90's and 80's etc.. its a common bearing used even by bmw and sabb ... its kind of an odd sound not realling sounding like a wheel bearing but i dont know what else it could be ... other than front diff taper bearings ...
thanks for the reply ...
