Beaten to death topic...
I'm an Australian/American with a work permit in Montreal, QC. I'm completely puzzled by the pricing of Audi A3 Quattro's between USA/CANADA. It appears that the number of used A3 Quattro's 2.0T between 2009-2010 are within the same pricing as it is in Canada. I have thought about purchasing in the USA and bringing it here but here are my questions:
1. If I am not a Canadian resident and will not import the car, will I have to pay Canadian taxes on it?
2. If I register it in the states will I be able to insure it using a Canadian Insurance company?
3. Will I need to register it in Canada to get insurance?
4. Will I need to pay taxes on it if I register it in Canada?
Any thoughts would be great. I originally wanted to buy a new one here in Canada but I don't want to wait the 18 months it takes to establish credit here.

I'm not sure how it works if you register the car in the US. That said, you can insure a car without registering (Is that really a word?) it. To register it in Canada you will have to insure it here I believe and you would definately have to import it and pay the taxes. I guess that only answers 3&4 but it's a start.

As far as I know, the A3 2.0T quattro does not exist in north America (or maybe just Canada?) I believe only the v6 versions are available with quattro on the A3 here.
Anyway, in order to register in Canada, you will need to pay Canadian taxes. Beyond that, every province has it's own insurance laws, so check with your local authorities to see what the exact requirements are.
