[2016 Q3 Technik] Confused about tail lights
Tonight, I've been driving around when the guy in the lane next to me rolls down his window and says, "You have no lights in the back!" I go mhumm, go home, park the car and check.
With the car started and running and the lights dial in the AUTO position...he appears to be right! The smaller, red lights in the very bottom of the bumper (left and right) both work, and when I press the brake pedal both large brake lights shine pretty bright...but otherwise, when the car is running, no part of the larger tail lights is on—and I think it maybe should be.
Could anyone please confirm which exact part of the tail lights should be on with the car started but the brake not applied? This is now driving me nuts because I've tried watching YouTube videos to confirm this, and (with daytime demos, anyway), the larger lights actually appear to be off, but when the guy presses the brake, both large lights and the tailgate light comes on.
...so this is weird. There's no way that only the small lights should be on at night...but at the same time, I've got no burned-out bulbs and the brake lights themselves work OK. Any ideas??
