Ask me anything about Audis!

Re: Ask me anything about Audis!
Hi, MFabrik I have a quick question regarding my 2009 A6 3.0T car, love it and am enjoying driving it. Hope you can enlighten me.
Concern is every 2500 to 3000 KM i keep getting sign that oil is low, is this normal.
I have checked the oil dipstick when the car is cold and warm, and both time the oil was just above the min level, put in 1/2 to 3/4 of litre and oil level is back to normal for the next 3000 Km.
Question is does this car really burn that much oil within just 3K of driving, are other people having to do the same then it gives me a bit of relief that its not just my car.
Please provide me feedback on this.....
thanks

Re: Ask me anything about Audis!
Hi MF
Just got myself into a bind. While changing my camshaft tensioner the tension tool broke after I removed tensioner and camshafts on driver side. The marks came off of the camshaft sprockets and chain came off so now I have no way of lining them up for proper timing. Is there a way to line them up once this happens? My concern is how will I know if valves are in proper position even if I have 16 rollers between the camshafts sprockets once I reassemble the camshafts and tensioner? Or are valves not under a lot of tension when locked at TDC. I also had the crankshaft lock tool installed. I did fine a diagram showing the notches on crankshafts and they lined these up with 16 rollers between them. Will this work or is there more involved? Below is the link for the diagram and a picture of how I would line up my camshafts once I replace chain. Wings on cams will also be in correct position(large holes facing in).

After reviewing what you have shared we think it would be best if you could email us pictures of Cylinder One at TDC with the cam lobe positions. If you have not put them in yet we can attempt to walk you through the process.

Re: Ask me anything about Audis!
Hi,
I have a 2004 A4 1.8T and a few days ago, my check engine light came on. A few days later, my low coolant warning popped up. After allowing the engine to cool down, i added some coolant to my tank. i looked undeneath the car, no leak. Today i was driving, and once again the warning came on and the temperature gauge jumped from 90-130! Upon getting home, i once again let it cool down and i saw my level of cooland was fine! Does anyone know what the problem could be? is it just a faulty sensor or is my engine really overheating? Help!
Thanks, Mike

Re: Ask me anything about Audis!
I have had a small coolant leak for the past few week and as long as I kept coolant in it everything was fine. Well a couple of days ago I lost the coolant cap and drove with it off for a handful of miles, the car shut off and now will not start. I poured coolant back in it and got a new cap but still it won't start, the interior dash blinks few good amount of times and when I turn the key there is just a few empty clicks that sounds. My friend is telling me that the alternator needs to be replaced.
Does anyone know what may have happened and perhaps what I should do about this little predicament?
Thanks

The empty clicks suggest a dead battery. Rule of thumb is one click is the starter, multiple clicks when trying to turn over the car is the battery.
It is quite possible the alternator is not charging the battery and does need to be replaced and a simple output test can determine if the alternator is faulty or not.
Now with the coolant issue, were there any signs of overheating before the car shut down?

What is the mileage currently on your A6? The other questions I have is what is your oil change interval? Are you following the Audi 15K?

Would you have access to VAGCOM by any chance or able to read that CEL? Do your fans spin in normal operation?
There is a warm up test cycle available through VAGCOM which would be able to determine whether there is a faulty temp sensor at play. Also, have you taken a look at the water pump for any signs of leakage?
