Grom iPod with Symphony head unit??
Has anyone installed a Grom iPod adapter? I have a 2004 A4 Avant and I'm considering this option. Any advice, experience, input would be appreciated.
Also, is there a way of checking the security code for your head unit while it is installed and working before you do any messing around and possibly launch it into safe mode? Is the code in my manual somewhere?
Thanks!

Re: Grom iPod with Symphony head unit??
Mine is the Symphony and I installed the Grom. Works perfectly, but you need to specify this is the stereo you're wiring to. There is a harness that comes with it and connects to the Grom unit. The harness has a specific connector to the stereo (it can either a connection to the back of the radio or to CD wire in the trunk). I chose the one with a connector to the back of the radio. The other wire connects to your ipod. And you run this to the glove compartment or where you see fit.
I chose to take out the ash tray and run it to this cavity. Then I carefully, carefully drilled a hole to run the wire that connects to the ipod. Since I don't smoke, I now have an extra cubby hole. This is ideal because I can easily connect either my ipod or iphone or passenger's ipod. It's also a good set up because the Symphony can't display song titles, so I can both see the ipod display or even select songs from the ipod.
The other cool thing is that there is red light from the ashtray which provides some very nice glow over the ipod.
Essentially, the Grom set up emulates an external CD changer. You can advance songs from the head unit.
For the radio code, you need to refer to the separate radio instruction manual that came with your car.

Hi Henry -- do you have any pics of the ashtray setup? I am looking to do the same with my 02 A6 avant with the Symphony unit with 6 CD in-dash changer. I am using the XCarLink ipod adapter which is a pretty easy plug and play setup so its more about the wiring and easy ipod access for me.
Thanks in advance for any info.

Here you go. I can't find the instructions to remove the ashtray but there is a mechanism that needs to be carefully removed so that it can be re-used in the future.

Re: Grom iPod with Symphony head unit??
Thanks Henry -- this is very close to what I am looking to do. However, I am stuck at the moment -- have the ashtray 1/2 in and 1/2 out. It feels like I have one of the tabs undone on top of the ashtray, but now it wont close -- it stays open about 1/4 inch when trying to close.
Any directions on ashtray removal would be appreciated. Did you have to take out Symphony and climate control to do it or are there some clips/tabs to undo before pulling out-- looked all over google, various audi forums, vagcat, etc -- no luck. Let me know!

If you don't want to use the ashtray again, then you can pry it out. It ends up breaking the roller mechanism that allows it to slide to retract.
To remove it cleanly, yes, you did need to slide out the radio, then the climate control. Here is what someone else did on another forum:
Removing 01 A4 ash tray??? - AudiWorld Forums
Once you expose the ashtray with the other parts out of the way, then you can see it well enough to tilt and lift out.
If your setup is the same then it should work.
