Timing Belt & Audio Questions for 2001 S4
Hey guys I just hit the 160k mark and I've been told to do the timing belt along with the water pump and some smaller items. First question, is this all needed and If so how much should it cost me parts and labor?
Next I'm going to replace the front speakers, deck, and add a sub and amp. I've read that the speakers are actually mounted to the door skin and not in the door itself? I have a 5.25 component set I'd like to reuse if possible.
Thanks

Regarding the Timing Belt Kit - yes it is highly recommended to replace the complete TB Kit. Changing just the belt does not provide reliable protection of belt failure because components such as the hydraulic belt tensioner, idler pulley, water pump, etc don't last forever. If one of these components fail then worst case a new belt could be shreaded in a matter of seconds. If you see where all the TB Belt Kit parts get installed then it becomes clear that it is wise to replace them all while the front face of your 2.7T is open. Best bet is to shop around in your area for complete Timing Belt Kit installation quotes or research doing it yourself if your so inclinded.
Good Luck!
To replace just the TB Kit, at minimum the front bumper needs to be removed and the Lock Carrier put into Service Position. If you have not done a 2.7T TB Kit before then it may be better to remove the Lock Carrier for easy access to all TB Kit components and mounting hardware otherwise some of the work is by feel. In the above pics the 2.7T TB Kit was replaced as part of doing some other work while access was easy.
