Default Oil catch can

I would like to install an oil catch can, i'm curious as to the best spot to put it so it would benifit the whole breather system.
I have my intake manifold off and the breather is connected to the top of the crank area i guess :-s
Would it be wise to put it right off there so the whole breather system is affected by the catch can instead of the feed from the y pipe?

Here's a pic.

sorry if the graphics i added are too much, the things you can do it paint these days []

Find/make a diagram of the whole system, then determine where you want to put the catch can. Go to your engine bay and determine the 'best' spot to actually mount the can. I decided to simplify the whole system (I've never had a B5 S, so I can't give you specifics there) by redesigning it from the ground up.

Maybe someone can take the time to educate me here. What is an oil catch can, what are the benefits of a catch can and how does it work?

long story short, in your piping you see buildups of oil, in the breathers inlet piping, and in the intercoolers, all the way to the y pipe. The oil catch can is designed to catch that oil and cool it so it condencses in the can and not in the rest of the breather system. too much of that oil can clog lines, and it becomes like a sludge almost. I'd like to keep it out of my intercoolers and piping as well as my breathers, just to help with reliability, and to add to my "what i've done to my car" list.
I figure it cant cost much but it'll be something i know i'll enjoy because knowing i'm preventing a problem.

I am going to have to check out the whole breather system to see where it would fit best. As far as the location of the can, i could care less, it's where i'm adapting it to the system that i'm concerned with.

Many suggest that a catch can will do a great job at avoidng known issues of TFSI engines (ie: RS4's).

where did u get that done? I'm looking into getting my motor carbon cleaned.
Also, what did u use to take that picture?
I found an endoscope at say als in woodbridge for 65.00 that works as a usb camera as well so i could do some inspecting myself. pics like that make it seem worth it!

The local dealership took the pics and did the cleaning (under warranty). Aside from fixing the the CELs (MIL and EPC), the add'l found power was quite noticeable

Most cars have PCV and/or EGR systems that recirculate 'dirty' air (read: oil vapour, uncombusted fuel, etc.) back into the intake tract. On various vehicles, this can have little, to very drastic, effects. Catch cans, for which there are a variety of designs, are often placed inline to 'catch' all the gunk being injected into the intake. Sometimes, people even 'catch' the crap and vent the air to atmosphere.

I once bought a TDI with 170,000KM on it and the intake manifold had well over 50% of the cross-sectional area clogged. I've run a catch can on every car I've owned.
