Rear window on A4 Avante just exploded
Just closed the tailgate on my A4 without any item even in the boot, didn't
slam it down or use the rear washer to close it & the whole back window just
exploded in a million bits. I mean every part just exploded, showering me &
my daughter with glass. I rang the local dealer who told me 'It's nothing to
do with us' to which I replied that it is clearly a defect in the glass as
it hasn't come into contact with anything.
I'm off down in a short while so sort it out, but whatever happens I aint
paying.
Anyone else had this kind of problem with glass?
Cheers

Its the pressure from the inside pushing out, it happens allot on cars, its
not really a defect,
I would imagine it was a hot day and you had your aircon on using recycle,
if a window was open inside the car, than this wouldn't have happened
<obviously you cant leave windows open> its the same principle as a VW
beetle, very hard to close the door because the car is so well sealed that
there is no air to escape and causes a vacuum inside the car.
Your insurance <in the UK> will cover this as a broken windscreen and will
charge a excess usually £50.00 and no premium increase.

Hi, it was this morning, cool & i hadnt been driving it for 12 hours!
Anyway, the garage have told me it will be covered under warranty as the
glass has stress fractured due to a possible manufacturing fault so no real
problem. As always, it's the attitude of the service staff that infuriates
me with the attitude 'tough luck, nowt to do with us' I wonder how many
times they get away with it.

Glad you got that sorted, Nige - it certainly hasn't been too hot in
Bradford these last few days! Glad you and daughter not hurt, as you could
have been. That wouldn't be Wharfedale Audi would it BTW?

They were a bit slow at fixing windscreen chips but they've been OK apart
from that. The A3 they sold me has been very good so far (6 months later).

I have had a couple of problems, this one & my wife's A4 cab, the cab lost a
bit of spoiler on the front & had a bit of a knock, they lost the spoiler
thing, told me I now had a TT (god knows why!) & then never rang me back to
sort it out!
Such is life with dealers, there is no way in hell they could ever be worse
than the VW lot next door!
I'm starting my own business soon so my A4 will be going, I'm thinking about
a A3, is yours a diesel?
I must say, I'm not keen on the new A3 by any means, one day an S3 will be
mine!

RE: Rear window on A4 Avante just exploded
Hi Nigel,
It is really a bit of a common problem as I was telling you in some other
post - this glass is simply not up to standard.
Did I ever tell you I had my windscreen replaced (it got scratches as a
result of a defective wiper) - and badly installed - with a faulty one? When
I was driving behind that glass I was under the illusion I was experiencing
time-warp . The dealer would tell me I was dumb and that they saw no
problem at all with it. I had to threaten to tell everyone in town and give
them a ride in my magnificent Audi magnifying glass to persuade the dealer
to install a righto one.
Make sure of the following two things:
1.- The new glass is not faulty.
2.- Installation is done by specialists or the glass will start to creak and
make funny noises like mine did.
Good luck,
JP Roberts

No, mine's a 1.6 Sport - the diesels are very good of course. I don't like
the new A3 at all, presumably the old A3s may come down a bit in price now
so you could get a diesel or 1.8T not too expensively.

Re: Rear window on A4 Avante just exploded
Tempered Glazing whether it is auto glass or window glass can have
imperfections in the glass during the tempering process. This often results
in spontaneus implosions.
Tempered glass is held in tenson in the surface and if there is an
imperfection at the surface the entire sheet will implode. This has
happened to me in 1981 with a '79 Mustang (awful car). My passenger window
imploded and I was showered with glass as I drove. It happens, but it
certainly is a defect.
