Long Life Oil
I have recently purchased a new Audi which is filled with the Castrol SLX
Longlife II Oil from new. When I press the service button on the dash I am
told that the car will cover 19,000 miles before it's first service.
I am a great believer in regular oil changes to keep an engine tip top and
the thought of my car going this distance on the same oil worries me to say
the least. I was thinking of maybe changing it myself half way at around
9,000 miles. I want the engine to last.
I'd be interested to hear of other peoples experiences with the long life
service concept - is there anyone out there whom has a high mileage car
which has used the variable servicing? If so how is it running? Is this
long life oil really that good?
Your comments are appreciated.

Re: Long Life Oil
I change my oil three times a year. Two are essentially forced as I change
grade in fall and in spring. Then there's one in mid summer. All happen at
about 7000kms as my annual mileage is about 21000kms.
I know VAG went to 6 months with the new filter but I ignore it. I also use
Mobil 1 synthetic.

I presume you're referring to Automatic Variable Service (AVS).
I've got that om my 2002 TTC 225. It looks like my first service will be
around 18,000 miles. I have no problem with this. Using the prescribed
longlife oil is a must though - 225 TTs use Castrol Formula SLX as opposed
to the Longlife II. There are plenty of UK TT owners who follow the AVS
intervals.
The bottom line is your personal preference whether you do an interim oil
change - I can't give a techie answer I'm afraid
Enjoy your new Audi (and don't worry about the oil).

deu to the engine construction cag has introducuced long life service
inervals from the 2002 model and up for most of the models. personally i
haven`t seen any problems due to longer service interval. the dealer advises
an oil and filter change at least every 30,000 KM or every 2 year but this
is also depending on the way you drive your car.

I had an Audi 100, 1.8 from 1985, when it was smashed by a moron passing a
red light it had passed 450.000 km.
Through the years I have always followed the standard oil change intervals
15.000 km, the engine was running good with low oil and gas consumption,
only repair was new tappets at 360.000 km, the mechanics said that it was
the first time the valve cover had been opened.
My current A6 follows the 30.000 km intervals and has passed 250.000 km.

Likewise. Although this is my 6th Audi, it is the first where I had the
option of AVS.
Previously I changed my oil & filter every 3 months/3000 miles - but
increased the interval on my S3 to 6 months/6000 miles when I had the oil
analysed (and it was found to be fine) then to 10,000 miles/1 year (which
was the service interval). The S3 used no oil between changes over the
31,000 miles I had it.
I need to check what the AVS is saying about my first service - it had
dropped from 19,000 miles to 14,000 miles last time I looked (about 3 weeks
ago).
