98 A4 2.8 Q -- what to watch out for?
Hi,
I'm thinking of getting an A4 v6 Quattro for my daily
commuting (40 miles one way). I know, I know, perhaps
it's not the best use for it, but I gotta get something
and AWD is very attractive where I live (New England).
The one I'm looking at has 65K miles. I took it for
a test drive today and it runs and feels fine. There
are cosmetics the dealer is going to fix, but I am more
concerned of something mechanical or electrical.
So, what to watch out for?
Thank you.
Victor
P.S. I noticed that the clutch pedal engages (or dis-
engages) at the very top of its way. Is that normal
for an Audi? I for some reason got used to mid-way
engaging of a clutch. Am I wrong, or do I sound like
I've never driven a sports car? Just curious...

Most significant item at that mileage is timing belt. If it hasn't already
been done, it will need to be done very soon. That's about $800 to $1200 and
you should also replace water pump, thermostat, serpentine belt, tensioner,
etc. Brakes should be checked as Audis go through pads fairly quickly.
Usually, if the pads are shot, your rotors will be too - you can't usually
turn them. Also, you should check the CV joint boots and if there's any
cracking or deterioration, replace them. Otherwise, you'll be replacing the
entire CV joint which is considerably more expensive.

It seems to be common for that A4; I have one as well. It's one of the less
attractive features IMHO.
