1988 Audi 90 Fuel system difficulties
Help!
1988 Audi 90 5 cyl 2.3. (FWD)
I am trying to daignose problems with my fuel system. Mostly the car
just does not feel like it has the pep it should, and i suspect the
mixture is to blame. I Have:
Changed timing belt and timed correctly.
replaced fuel pump and filter
air filter
run fuel injection cleaner through multiple times. (no dieseling going
on, either)
My check engine light comes on and goes off periodically.. I had
actually found that there was no lamp in the check engine spot on the
instrument cluster. I suspect the cars previous owners simply removed
it because they were pretending the problem would go away.
When i run the fault diagnostic system, however, he check engine light
comes on, and does not flash.. is just ON. and i have found nothing in
the bently that addresses THAT.
Following the bently procedures, i think i am doing everything right
to get to where the codes should read out.. but they do not. i do not
even get the "all clear" code...
anyone ever have this problem before? any idea what to do. ? thanks
Kevin

Well, these are the usual suspects.
> My check engine light comes on and goes off periodically..
After owning four type 44 N/A 5spd I have had a similar experience.
Pulling my codes i got 2244 which indicated a problem with the knock
sensor. It is located on a plate off the rear end of the valve cover.
The problem was poor performance, especially over 3000 rpm. The ECU
samples the KS at 3000 and if it doesn't like what it sees it retards
the timing.
The fix in my case was to just clean the spade connectors on the KS.
Apparently they were dirty and then the ECU talked nice to the KS and
the world was good.

Never saw that. Always did its flashing thing after inserting the fuse
into the FP relay. Another note is that on non- California spec cars the
codes are lost every time the ignition is turned off so to find
something you need to drive until you see the light then stop with the
engine running and pull the codes. Try checking SMJ for troubleshooting.
IT is in there somewhere.

I actually had gone to get ice cream (about a 20 mile drive) and saw
the light come on a couple of days ago. just figured for good merrit
i'd pop open the hood and put in the fuse to see if it read out
anything,. but once again, just a solid check engine light.
one final question to this, do i leave engine running when i do the
fault lamp proceedure or do i turn the ignition back to kill the
engine but not turn off the power all together? i always just kept the
engine running. thanks again

I think that you need to insert the fuse for four seconds and them
remove it to get the light to flash.

You would need to leave it running because if you turn it off it will
loose the codes.

Thanks again. I'll give it a try!
