My car is due for the smog test again, but it it is running rich when
cold. Most likely it will not pass!

If somebody has had similar problems, perhaps they can post some tips
for possible remedies.

If it is equipped, you should replace the oxygen sensor on the car - you can
do that cheaply using a generic Bosch one and splice it into the Audi
harness connector on your old sensor. The car may also have a problem with
the thermo-time sensor - activating the cold start injector and richening up
the mixture for an unnecessarily long time. You should get your hands on a
Bentley manual for the car if you're going to troubleshoot the fuel system
by yourself.

Check your cold start engine temperature sensor.

new Bosch oxygen sensor, but the ctalic converter is a cheap $75
dollar type. Perhaps that may be the problem as well.
