Default A6 2.7T (2000) - Catalytic converter

Hi - my A6 was written off 2 weeks ago by a deer collision and I'm looking at replacement.

One vehicle I'm considering is another A6 of the same vintage, but the owner did not replace the cat when it was required, it's a straight pipe now.

I'm British so not sure about Canadian/AB laws. Is it legal to drive a car here that had a cat, but is now absent of one, (I'm thinking about emission control regulations, etc); what are the effects on the car and driving performance - ie is this a good idea?
