4.2L reliability and fuel consumption

Re: 4.2L reliability and fuel consumption
All of this maintenance could contribute to the gas mileage although I do believe that I am no different than other 4.2 S4 owners.

Re: 4.2L reliability and fuel consumption
for the 4.2 in the fatbody C5 A6, it's a pretty solid choice. Belt driven, and the belt is up front, so much easier maintenance wise than the 4.2 S4 with the chain driven 40 valve V8 that the B6/7 S4 has. Not great on gas...and not great on power in stock form, but all around a cool car
All of the 4.2 C5 A6 cars got the RS6 treatment as far as flared fenders go. A couple of RS6 parts like front bumper/grille...and it starts to really wake up as a BAMF. I'd love to own one.
In November I went to Detroit to help a friend do an engine pull and install JHM longtube equal length headers on his C5 A6 4.2. His car is seriously dangerous now...VERY fast, and very powerful.
The C5 weaknesses are definitely things like the intake manifold and the entire exhaust system from bad manifolds to bad downpipes to bad catback. The catback and downpipes can be modified without crazy expense, but the headers are another story.

Re: 4.2L reliability and fuel consumption
different ECU
different sized tank
different type of car (thus different driving styles emerge)

Re: 4.2L reliability and fuel consumption
I can't believe the mileage you guys are quoting here. I have a 2001 A6 2.7T and I can only get on average 16L/100km (17 miles per imperial gallon) in the city. Highway is not much better at 13-14 l/100km. AND that is only the V6 engine. Something is screwy here.

Re: 4.2L reliability and fuel consumption
I can understand your city mileage potentially, but there's something wrong about the highway fuel consumption...

Re: 4.2L reliability and fuel consumption
I am averaging 12L/100Km mixed (mostly in town- rural). This is my weekend car - so it gets driven pretty hard. Same mileage as my work minivan. Highway gets 10L/100Km. Wifes 4.2 Touareg gets 16L/100Km - something wrong with A6Newbie's car (or foot).
