Rims and Tire Fitment

Rims and Tire Fitment
Hey everyone,
I've looking at getting some new rims for my 99 A6 Quattro and I was wondering what size should they generally be. I was thinkin' about getting 18''s but someone told me that I would have to get some more expensive low profile tires. I'm looking to drive this car in the winter, so what size should I look at if i want winter/all-season?
Also, I asked Taylor Audi what the offsets is and they said that the A6's have a factory 42mm offset. But all the rims im looking at are around 35mm offset. Is this going to cause problems or is the offset difference not a problem?
Any suggestions?

Re: Rims and Tire Fitment
the lower the offset the more the rim will be pushed out towards the fender. so to go from 42mm to 35 is a 7mm push outwards. not really a big deal. i think 18's are the way to go because i've read that 19's ride much harsher.
will you buy separate winter rims/tires? if not then you'll need to grab some nice all season tires and hope for the best.

well im a student so i cant really afford to go out and buy a set of rims and 2 sets of tires.. i wish buuut university is a bitch haha
so im probably going to go for some all seasons but im not sure if they have reasonably priced all seasons at 18''. 17''s i believe have all seasons commonly but i could be wrong..
