Oil leaks from axle seals (rear differential)
Hi, I am a proud A6 owner and I would like to hear your expert opinion. I recently went to my garage and my mechanic told me that I have an oil leak coming from the rear differential. I guess the seals are getting weak. Is this a common problem? How much work is involved to get this oil leak fixed and how much time does this job usually take? How many seals are there in the rear differential that usually need to be replaced. Is there anything else that I should watch out for while getting this fixed?
I appreciate your time, and thanks in advance!

Common issue, and two different seals on each side. It doesn't take long to replace if the correct tools are handy. The key is to replace the large half shaft bolt (One time use), marking the eccentric on the lower control arm (alignment) and follow factory torque specs. Test the vent to ensure it's not plugged.

I just found out that my rear differential is leaking. I figured it out by visual inspection - I saw some liquid on my garage floor beneath the rear differential!
Did you get this fixed and how much did it cost?
