noob here with an 01 a6 4.2 quattro
Hey guys and gals.
I just became a member of the family. I'm Peter, married father of two with another on the way. I'm a professional accountant and part time car dabler, landscaper and pretty much anything not typical of an accountant. We live in Edmonton and winter has finally arrived. Damned cold too!!!
I've just become the proud owner of an 01 A6 4.2 Quattro. I had been looking at a few options; namely a few bimmers and an 03 A6 2.7TT. I'm a big v8 fan and fell in love with this car as soon as I saw it. Aside from the killer look, the only reason I got the thing was because of the v8.
My wife and I were in the market for a couple of replacements for our cx7 and f150. We're expecting a 3rd boy in the new year and a minivan was definitely in the plans. Having satisfied the minivan requirement, I quickly set off to find a toy for me. I had no more use for a truck and wanted something fun to drive.
I'm a mustang guy (hence the name), through and through and just finished the last two years rebuilding a 89 lx coupe...all in my garage, with the help of a few guys. The thing runs like a champ, having run a pb of 12.06 @ 118.93 on crappy Gforce sport street tires. A new 6spd is being installed and with the help of some drag radials I should see a low 11's and possibly a 10 this coming year. The cool thing is that the car is completely set up for auto crossing and road courses complete with rear disc (yeah, drums were stock) and full adjustable suspension. I will be taking my solo 1 course this spring and see if I can get some track time over the summer.
Anyways, I didn't join an Audi forum to talk about mustangs. Back to the A6.
Beautiful, doesn't even to big how it looks to me. Unfortunately, I don't have any pictures as I don't take possession of it until tomorrow. But I did have it on the weekend to inspect it and it all looked good.
I spent the better part of two weeks researching all things Audi, and as much as I can find on the 4.2 L v8.
I have a tonne of questions, but mainly about maintenance. I am a big DIY'r, not just because I'm a cheap accountant, but because I hate the idea of paying someone big bux to not only have a young kid work on my car, but to do stuff that I am more than capable of.
From the records I reviewed, I know that every recall and all major servicing has taken place at the proper intervals, including the timing belt. There are new coil packs and it just came back from regular maintenance.
I am already thinking of some upgrades (exhaust, hedders and cams) will be spending quite a bit of time here researching and asking plenty of questions.
However, before signing off, I do have a couple quick questions:
GPS - car is equipped but doesn't have any discs. Are there any I can download and burn?
Programmer - are there any good programmers out there that will allow you to play with the various parameters of the OBD?
Telephone - in the arm rest there is the factory plug for a cell phone. Is there any way I can configure some type of wiring to allow me to use my android via the factory system?
Anyhoo...I look forward to meeting you guys and hope to learn as much as I can while here.
Peter

Re: noob here with an 01 a6 4.2 quattro
wow...first and only post was nearly two years ago. I had forgotten about this thread, not that anyone actually commented lol.
Two years later and I'm still quite content with the car. This past weekend I replaced the front and rear shocks, and cv shafts and can't believe the difference - it's like a brand new car!!!
Thank god for the Internet. Everything I need to know was found after some searching, and overall, the install went rather well.
Still deciding on a few enhancement mods, and am leaning towards boost, but that may be another year or so. My mustang hit the 11's this year (still more to go on current setup) so I'm kind of spoiled on the power end of things, and wouldn't mind seeing an extra 100 hp or so out of the quattro.
Still have one minor issue, 02sensor throwing cel codes, and after countless hours reading and searching, I've finally come to the conclusion that the previous owner had new pipes installed and had relocated the o2 sensors - total hack job btw!!! So in the spring, I will definitely be looking at having a new exhaust system installed; one with a little more growl to it. Suggestions are appreciated on exhaust!
Anyways, I just threw on the winter rims and tires and am eagerly awaiting some snow to fall here in Edmonton. Snow on ground = ESP OFF !
