Default Need advice on a 1999 A6

Hi guys,
im looking very seriously into buying a 1999 A6 2.8 Quattro. The car has 1400,00KMs and the body look to be in really nice shape. i just wanted to know if there are any problems that i should know before i buy this car. Any insight would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks in advance

check if the timing belt has been done... if it hasnt it needs to be looked at... at the same time change the water pump as well...

Thumbs up Re: Need advice on a 1999 A6

Just make sure the car has been serviced fully! These cars are great as long as it was kept up with the service - timing belt is very important! As Black RS4 says - water pump along with T/B. The engine is solid and will last a long time with regular oil changes! Make sure the suspension is good - control arms are not creeking - if so they need to be replaced. A great car and a sweet ride! I relaced stock suspension with Eibach pro kit and Hsport sways front and rear - fantastic improvement! I am running 17 X 8 rims with 235/45 tires.

I currently own a car just like this except with lower mileage. Make sure that the timing belt has been done and the water pump changed at the same interval.

Some additional things you may want to check are leaking cam seals and torn CV joints as well as run a VIN check on the car to make sure there are no surprises that you don't know about.

My best advice is to make sure service records do exist and that oil changes have been kept up with as well as other general maintenance items.

Hi!
New member here. I bought the same car last June. It had 76,500 km. First a defective spark plug changed, then a car wash flooded the computer which caused me to drive in safe mode only, then the coolant sensor caused me to flood and stall. Now a leak underneath turns out to be the steering rack, seal gone can't find a used rack anywhere here in Edmonton.

So I would not buy another Audi and can't wait to sell this one. That is after I got hit by a pick up and sustained $4,100 in damage...we are so short of body shops that they can't fit me in until June.

Haha you sound like how I felt with my Land Rover. Do NOT ever buy one of those.

Just so u know .... i bought one a 1999 a6 with 174 000 km on the records from the dealership up until the day i bought it..... timing belt and all done 30 000 km before i bought it at dealership.... car was maintained to the km on recommended service times. First thing was the plastic y for the coolant... it just broke.... coolant went everywhere. 90 bucks for the plastic audi part ... vs 10 bucks for the piece from home depot that was the same length diameter and a non corrosive metal/ I soaked it in coolant to check for chemical reaction.... after 3 days none.... so i used it.
Thermostat went at 15 000 km after purchasing ...... so i figured what the **** it is open..... had them all replaced including timing belt pump everything with only about 50 000 km on the set ....but i know for sure when it was done.... brake pads had to be replaced.... pretty standard .... just front. Then the right control arm went ....... then 1 month after the right the left went ..... then 3 weeks after the new left the right front upper goes..... and then the left lower ....
The driving along ...... on the highway nothing weird flat straight highway ...... the skid plate rips off.....
no idea.... i am having the reset of the control arms done and i am now getting leaking oil ..... i have had the car 14 monthes now..... now in all fairness , i did put over 45 000 on the car in 14 monthes.
