Exclamation Engine Issues - 99 A6 2.8L

Hey all,

I need some help please.

Last Thursday my MIL light started to flash and I took it to Tune Dub to have it scanned, the codes came up as misfires. Unfortunately George is too good at what he does and couldn't get me in for 3 weeks to properly look it over, so I took it home. The battery died while scanning the car, so I changed it out that night.

Friday I drove it with no flashes on the MIL, Saturday it flashed every time the rpm's went above 2200. Sunday I didn't drive it, and on Monday it wouldn't start. I have towed it to a mechanic who works out of his garage because I couldn't wait to have Tune Dub look at it at the end of the month.

So far I have changed the plugs, wires, ignition coil and crankshaft sensor (this was the only code other than misfires the next time we scanned it). It still won't start, and now it is throwing a camshaft position sensor bank 1 code.

The voltage is good to the connection on the sensor so the plan is to replace it, but any advice or insight would be greatly appreciated. Should I expect more codes and more trouble after this has been replaced?

Update: replacing the camshaft sensor has brought the engine back to life. It starts and seems to run much better than it had prior - at least that is what I'm telling myself to justify the plugs, wires, etc.

Unfortunately I'm still getting the same codes: p0300 - random cynlider misfire, p0301 - cylinder 1 misfire, p0302 - cylinder 2 misfire, p0303 - cylinder 3 misfire, p1338 - camshaft position sensor bank 1 short-to-ground.

I talked to George today and he suggested pulling the ECM for 10 minutes. If this fixes it I'll be pissed that I spent a lot of unecessary time, stress and money replacing items that didn't really need it, but at the same time happy that I'll have my car back.

I'll update again once I know the result of resetting the ECM.

So the ECM/ECU was pulled for 15 minutes, replaced and no change to the codes coming up.

Checked all of the circuitry to the ECM and everything is 100%. I'm stumped.

I can't seem to find an ignition control module on this car, and the ignition coil looks like this may have been built into it and packaged as one item. If I search 98 2.8L engine it comes up, but not on the 99.
