In toronto .... yes. quattro won't help you if you are running summer tires in a foot of snow. Price depends how resourceful and quick you are at buying them. If you wait until the first dump of snow prices will spike: tire companies only make so much a year and shops put their order in in august. If you wait till the stock in tire shops is gone you will obviously pay more.

Summer and all season tires are not going to provide the sure footed control that winters provide. Stopping distances are reduced considerably and turning control is substantially better with tires made for the cold temps. When the difference between an accident and a close call could be inches, why take a chance ?

Get in touch with Allen @ Simply Tire - he's got great pricing on Winter packages ...

You wouldn't believe the amount of information there is on this site for winter tires if you used the search function.

When I bought my A4 the dealer said bluntly when I asked him the same question..."Quattro will help you move, winter tires will help you stop..."

So long story short, yes. Get winter tires. The cost is about the same as running all seasons all year round. You can have 1 set all seasons that last about 2 years or 2 sets of tires that last sometimes up to 5 years if you store them properly.

Now to contradict myself... I drove a Mazda 3 for 3 winters with all season driving downtown from Markham daily and NEVER got stuck in snow. Maybe some slipping and sliding on heavy days but by evening it was all cleared out. If you drive very carefully then you should be fine will all seasons all year round. If you do get stuck (which will probably happen about once a season)... then just call CAA or whatever and they'll get you out.

Don't sweat it if you can't afford it. The tire was invented in the 1800 and I'm sure they did just fine without quattro and deep treads.

See yA!

I put 4 Falken Eurowinters on all 4 corners (255/55/16) about a week ago. Today we got our first dump of snow, about 6" or so. I passed over a dozen cars stuck spinning their wheels on the hill up to our house with absolutely no problems. Braking is a pretty stress free situation as well. If you get even a small amount of snow and you need to drive your car... get snow tires.

Having high performance summer AND winter tires gives you the best traction\handling\etc at all times. Also like OH9EH4 mentioned you will get a lot more mileage out of your tires that way.

If I'm not mistaken Quebec require snow tires by law now? Not a bad idea when you see all the people in the ditch around here.

Yup, worth every penny. AWD / 4WD will NOT assist you in stopping or preventing you from sliding directly into that tree down the street in your neighbour's yard.

Winter tires (not all season) are a much softer compound of rubber that don't ice up as easily and have a tread that is designed to not pack in the snow. Regular tires are like skiis for your car - Quattro or not.

From the guy who's avatar is a quattro in the middle of a lake covered in 8 inches of powder

just thought i'd throw in my 2 cents...
got a 2010 avant sline that came with 255/35/19 summer dunlops, had those on for 3 days ..needed a winter set and after looking around got 18" gunmetal VMR 708's and 255/40/18 pirelli sottozero serie2 .. got 1k on them now, the car lost NO performance on ashfalt, and the little snow driving i had was terrific... there's only a teeny bit of hum between 120 and 125 on a highway
