Default How expensive is A4 to maintain?

Hi there,

I have been thinking about buying an A4 Quatro 2.0T sedan (2009 model), but people I have talked to scaring me by saying it is too expensive to maintain. The question is how expensive is it? I know all these German cars are expensive to maintain, but I have been debating between the A4, C300 4Matic and 328xi. As bmw will change the model in 2012, I am mainly debating between A4 and C300. Can someone help me here to understand the cost of regular maintenance, such as oil change, breaks, tires etc.? On average how much do you spend on premium gas?

I never owned any luxury car before...which makes me bit nervous as well

If I am in the wrong forum, please let me know.

Regards,
macso

Thumbs up Re: How expensive is A4 to maintain?

Audi is a car that has 70% more parts than the rest of the cars. The parts do not cost more but there is more of them. The labour to do the repairs is twice as much as for VW Jetta.
I spend $4,000.00 per year for repairs and I drive 30,000.00 kms per year.
My Audi uses 11liters per 100km in the city.
I do not have bank loan on it so I think about it as having $360.00 of "loan payment" per month. I replace the whole modules when I need to so for example if transmission's bearing fails ($4,000.00) I replace the whole transmission for $2,500.00. The parts come from California Auto Wreckers and are low mileage and readilly importable.

I pass strings of cars uphill with ease as never before regardless of road conditions and weather. V8 American cars are no competition and they drop dead at 160 to 180 km/hr. The AUDI cools its oil and keeps on going and going and going.
At times I hit the side of the road and it does not make any difference in handling.

Once you drove an AUDI especially on ice or in the snow there is no way back for you!

Once you hear that BOSE Stereo all sonies go flat and bye bye.

This is the first car ever that I do not press gas pedal to the bottom. There is no need for it and if I do than the speedometer is at 230 km/hr in no time and the cars start coming from the front in groups of 6 and 10 and better not look at passenger faces because you see that they can not move their mouths from sheer fear.

AUDI is cool in the summer and hot in the winter.

Beware of Mercedes. They dropped their prices at the cost of safety. This car no longer survives frontal collisions and there are reports of heads cut of when they collide with trucks from behind. There is no roof reinforcement as safety cage in AUDI.

AUDI is money well spent family, performance, unprecedented safety and fun wise.
I drive the A4 and my wife an A6. We always have a 10 minute talk every day about what happened on the road that day and how Audi handled it. It keeps the family together this way.

Some POLICE consideration during the first week of driving must be given.

I come from a base Mazda 3, Probe GT, Civic SI...
I was fortunate enough to purchase 3 months ago my neighbor"s A4 who passed away last year
@ 75 years old: 2005 A4 with 17.000km!

The poster above owns an older A4 audi 1998 that do have their share of problems. Newer models came a long way since.....
You are considering a 2009 model!!! You would still have the 4 years/80,000km warranty if purchased from dealer and maybe add the 2 extra years OPC extra
Bottom line this car cannot come close to any econo box cars. They cost more to purchase, to operate and obviously to maintain. However you will pay for security, luxury and comfort.

Buying oil, filter, brake pads. rotors, servicing is obviously a bit more expensive
Advice: Purchase parts online and service at a local german specialist garage. Avoid stealership visits and simply enjoy your new car although it will cost you slighly more but then again you do get what you pay for isn<t true for anything in life?
Treat you car good, be good to her, be gentle and she will do the same...

Some POLICE consideration during the first week of driving must be given. I know somebody who received 5 tickets at once in DT Calgary
1. Unreasonable acceleration (Audi does not spin wheels, so police may not know what is happening)
2. Lack of Concern for others safety
3. Dangerous driving
4. Driving reckless
5. Discussing the number of tickets with issuing officer
The guy went to see the justice of peace and the judge voided all tickets at once, yet it is a good idea to ease up on the gas when police is around. The car moves different as it moves in one solid piece and some police do not understand this and think that the machine is dangerous.
Really must step in here and correct bad information. I am an ex police officer and don't ever remember there being a violation under any statute that allowed for the officer to issue a ticket to someone for discussing the number of tickets I was giving. There is also no offence known as Lack of Concern for others safety.... its either careless driving or dangerous driving but the person wouldn't get both. When you say the the person saw the justice of the peace and then the judge voided all tickets you are talking about two different people. I personally find it unbelievable that either person would just void all offences without talking to the issuing officer.

You either have wrong information or you fabricated the story.

@ adam

im assuming you have 1.8T chipped? I've got the V6, and its not fast at all. Yes it can reach 200+km/h but its not fast on a drag.

In concern of upkeep on these cars. They are very expensive. Lots of parts can go wrong, more often than a japanese cars. But when it works, it turns the road into a canvas, and the audi is your paintbrush, leaving a trail of essence for others to admire...

1.8T engine wise is bulletporof with years to back it, tested and tried...
All engines have their share of issues if you want peace of mind simply get a Honda or another Japanese appliance car It all comes to what you want and what is important to you
Older generations Audis like yours did have above average problems/issues.
MACPS is in another boat as he is considering a 2009!
German car is NOT an econo box so obviously it will cost more but there are ways to keep your maintenance reasonable that is all

Let's not scare him off...that is all

wow... thats all i need to say about these posts! LOL

macsp: now to answer your question that i have finished laughing over some of the other responses. i have an 07 A4 2.0T Quattro. i have had 3 warranty repairs. only one of these was an inconvenience but was a fast fix. i had something in the turbo warranty replace that i didn't even notice. second was a PCV valve in the engine. last was a coil pack recall that they also did at my normal interval.
for the first 2 years i did my oil changes every 16,000kms with no probs. now that i have some performance upgrades and drive it rougher i get reg oil change at 9,000kms.

besides the regular oil changes i haven't paid a dime out of my pocket in 2.5yrs besides oil. i changed my front breaks to ceramics because of the high metallic content in them made them squeal something awful in the cold winters here. plus side of it is less break dust and most stopping power.
