Default Figuring out which Winter Tires

Hey everyone

I'm driving a 2015 A4 (love it) and am trying to decide which size winter tires to get. The car came with 18" rims and Audi is selling a package with 17" winter tires (225/50/R17 Dunlop Winter Sport 3D). Their winter tires will cost about $2400 taxes in with installation. Pricey…

A good alternate that I found with decent reviews are the Bridgestone Blizzak WS70. Only issue is the size options. The guy at the tire shop suggested getting 215/60R16. He said the 16" rim would be fine (and even better actually in the winter). I'm just not sure if it's a good idea to shift sizes and whether that throws off the width or aspect ratio.

Anyone out there have any ideas re the sizing?

Thanks

For sure $2400. does sound a little steep.
Dealer here in Ottawa has the winter package for $1800. plus taxes. Consists of the 17 inch alloy rim along with Continental 100 (NordFrost) tires. Installation should be around $80.

I bought 17" blizzak ws80 225/50r17 from costco for under $800 including installation. picked up a set of used 17" audi rims off kijiji for a few hundred bucks.

Checking on tirerack, the smallest tire size is 17" without rubbing the brake components.

You want to go with 17" as your minimum due to brake clerance, not impossible to get away with a 16" but rare.

Check out 1010tires.com or .ca not sure, they are awesome and you can get winter sets for way cheaper than what the dealer is quoting you

He is correct. Narrow and tall 16" winter tires will out perform wide and low 17" or 18" tires. It will less likely to aquaplaning and slushplaning vs more likely to aquaplaning and slushplaning. It will be more affordable too.

16" Size is correct

I don't think that 16 inch rims will fit because of the big clippers. Even when you select a 17" non OEM be very carefull with the clearances. Let us know how did you do.
$2400 is very high, last year the package cost only $1700.

+1 when stepping down to 16" you will have a hard time finding a rim that will clear your brake calipers.

B7 & B8 front disc brakes are the dame size 320x30.
the difference is at the back. B7 288x12 vs B8 300x12

B7 stock wheels are 16", and so it should fit B8 also.

I'm running 205/60-16 as winter tires should be tall and narrow not low and wide.

There are plenty used Audi OE steel and alloy 16" rims on Kijiji
