2009 A4 Fuel Economy not matching advertised rates?
What's going on with my car's fuel economy?
I've driven my (family's) new 2009 A4 2.0T for about 900Kms, and my average fuel economy (throughout the 900kms) according to the trip computer is 13.2L/KM. I've reset the trip computer since getting the car from the dealer so this rate is all me.
The rates given by Audi are:
City: 9.0L/KM
Highway: 6.5L/KM
Thats significantly better than what I've been able to get!!@?
Before the required lesson about driving style, let me give you the low down:
I drive a fair combination of both highway and City, about 2/3 City and 1/3 Highway. I consciously make sure that I'm easy on the throttle (haha I'm 19 can you believe this?) in all acceleration. I also make sure to coast as much as I can comming to a red light instead of going blazing fast then braking real hard. I've only driven in S gear or manually shifted for about 15 minutes, and have never gone full throttle. Most of the time, I'm driving alone carrying no load whatsoever. Windows down below 60KM/H and AC on above 60KM/H. I never idle the car. By my own account, I seem to have a pretty fuel-efficient driving habit.
...So why do I have such a dismal fuel consumption rate?
Is it because the powertrain hasn't been broken in yet? I don't know. Enlighten me? Fuel used is 92 octane from Chevron

1. Make sure your tire pressure is up to snuff...
2. Every electrical accessory that is running taxes your economy slightly....
3. Wind, temperature, environment can factor in (hills, etc)...
4. What you should be hoping to do is find a route on your daily drive that requires as few repeated accelerations up to speed as possible....in my S4 part throttle acceleration up to 100 km/hr has my fuel consumption between 20-30L/100kms, keeping in mind i'm running an auto and the 4.2 8 cylinder..
5. Keep idlng times to a minimum
My friend who has the 2.0 averages about 11-12l/100kms

Umm folks, you do realize that the gas stations have winter-gas right now? Wait till summer gas....
Case in point: look at Petro Canada pumps, you'll see their winterblend being advertised. When you see that go away, expect another 100km or so out of your tank...

What is different about the winter from summer gas blends that would increase fuel economy? I always thought the difference in fuel consumption in the winter were the increased use of accessories (butt warmers, heaters, defogging, etc), longer warm up idling times, colder fluids (increased friction until warm).
I didn't realize the gas alone made any difference in mileage...

I have about 1500KM on my 09 A4 Avant, and the car has been averaging 12.X L/100KM. I drive a combination of highway and city, although I also get stuck in traffic quite a lot.
