Whining noise coming from the drivetrain...
Hi!
My 2008 A4 2.0 T Quattro 6sp produces a whining noise that seems to come from the drivetrain, from somewhere in the middle of the car, maybe from the rear. I did notice it before, but it was faint. Now that we can drive with opened windows, I notice it more... And it's very noticeable when I accelerate along a wall or store windows. It's very clear when I'm in 1st and 2nd, then it seems to go away as I shift in 3rd... The sound isn't there unless the car is moving, and it does change with RPM. It reminds me of that sound produced by rally cars... But much fainter...
So, I'm a bit worried... Is that normal? Sounds like there's oil missing somewhere... I bought the car 3 weeks ago. It's CPO, so I guess it will be covered by the warranty if something is wrong. The question is: do I go to the dealer a.s.a.p., like tomorrow morning?
Thanks

Re: Whining noise coming from the drivetrain...
Since you have CPO definitely take it in. They will try to charge you the $100 deductible but since you only just bought the vehicle I would push back on that bit. Just make sure you do it before 30 days pass. Don't think the 30 days means anything from a legal perspective but from a customer satisfaction view that's a reasonable discussion point for a used vehicle.

Re: Whining noise coming from the drivetrain...
Thanks for the reply. Just went this morning and took a test drive with a technician. He said that there was nothing wrong... I doubt that, I feel the sound is suspect. But it is difficult to hear it when driving in traffic. So they refused to go further since there's no warning indicator. He said that if there was something wrong that there would be a warning indicator. Yeah, right. Typical. So I'll wait and see how it goes. I have to go back there within the next two weeks so if it gets worse I'll insist that they check it thoroughly.

I went to an underground parking after work... The sound is there, but I don't know. It's faint. I'm not surprised he didn't hear it. And maybe I'm overacting. It's a "new" old car, I always have some fears that something isn't right and that the previous owner was a perfect moron and didn't take good care of his car.
I'll wait a bit and see what happens... I have to go back to the dealer for something else anyway. But thanks, I value your inputs!

Re: Whining noise coming from the drivetrain...
Went back to the dealership this morning, and they are going to replace the turbo... It's very noisy. At first I thought the noise was coming from under the car, but in fact it's coming from the engine bay. So, new turbo, at 60000 km... A little bit more than one month after I bought the car. How happy do you think I am that I paid for a CPO????? Very...
