I had the problem in my VW and was hoping with my new A3 it wouldnt be a problem (but im thinking they'll be much the same).
From what i researched: Newer cars have smaller fan blades in the A/C fan.. these blades accumulate condensation from the a/c when the a/c is turned off because of the temperature difference. mould then forms on the blades and thats the smell.
To prevent this, turn off your a/c (leaving the fan on) and if possible turn the heat up a couple minutes before turning the car off. this allows for the a/c and fan temperature to return to outside temperature and avoids condensation occurring.
other than that, spraying Lysol into the intake and interior vents and allwoing it to sit for a few minutes may help kill the mould. You can't stop the problem from reoccurring though.

oh so get this folks, i happened to pass by the dealership and figured, why not let's ask how much for them to rape my ***...haha...i mean how much to get this air cabin filter checked out...they asked for $250 to clean out...for those who wanted to know...anyways for a 15 minute clean job, wow...
