transmission problem: any suggestions

Re: transmission problem: any suggestions
Hi again,
I appreciate all your suggestions.
Here are a few more details:
this car was bought in the states, as is! The "bang" might not be the best sound to describe what happens with the shifting. There is somekind of jerking motion with sound with the shifting when I get to 80km, and when I slow down to 30km. it doesn't happen all the time... sometimes it stops for a few days! Go figure?
I was debating to go to a Mr Transmission for diagnostic tests... I'm hoping to avoid the Audi dealership...$$$!
Thanks again. If you need more info, please ask.
I appreciate your comments.

Is the noise persistent only when the car is shifting or does it "bang" only when you press on the accelerator to speed up to 80kmh? As I had posted earlier, to me it sounds like a Diff problem and not the tranny. BUT I COULD BE WRONG! I'm not too familiar with the A/T's shifting pattern as all the cars in our household are equipped with manual transmissions.
I'm sure everyone here would agree that Mr. Transmission would not be anyone's first choice to go to for diagnostics in your Audi. I would suggest going to an Independent Audi specialist near you and have them plug your car in to scan for codes. Mind you, there are different scanners available for our cars. If I'm not mistaken, a separate scan tool is used for the transmission. For all we know, Adam could be right. The car might simply need some ATF fluid added to it! :fingerscrossed:
EDIT: I re-read your last post and the jerking/banging might also be due to the torque converter. In my experience (from a totally different car), The jerking motion is an indication of the torque converter being shot. At least in a Mercedes that is!

I don't mean to be vague... it seems to bang once I get to 80km and want to go faster. It seems to bang during the gear shift (from 3rd gear to 4th).
I was afraid to go to the dealership for the scan, but I might just have to settle because I don't know any independant garages that might have that.

I give full credit to mksu19 and midrange here on this one. Far too little info to diagnose or pinpoint the problem let alone the solution. The solution could be as simple as adding fluid or as complicated at rebuilding the tranny. mksu19 suggested either a vid or a more detailed description to assist in giving a potential solution.
One thing is for sure..... you will have to spend some money to get it properly diagnosed and that should be by someone who is familiar with the Audi brand.

Wow! Finally
Thank you for responding. Your tranny does not bang it jerks, and this is a completely different story. All you need is to go to the dealer or a mechanic that openly describes himself as German Car Specialist.
Do not even try to go to Mr. Transmission or something like that, because they do not have tools, patience experience nor proper fluid to do the job.
It sounds like the jerk is when shifting into 3 gear Right? Typical scenario for dirty fluid.
You need to do 2 things
1. Transmission flush untill liquid is clear.. 2 or 3 times
2. Pour new transmission fluid
I give you 98% chance that this will clear the problem.
Now, you have a choice here: replace transmission fluid now or replace the transmission later.
As far as your differentials are concern I do not think that you have a problem with them. They are very tough parts made with Kiruna Steel from Sweden and they last forever.
