Shifting issue with CVT when WOT...
Hey guys.
Having a bit of an issue and wondering if anyone else has had this problem or can shed some light on the possible cause.
Car is a 2.0T FWD w/CVT. 53K on the odo. I have had it for about 1600km now.
When I go WOT in D, it seems to get stuck in 3rd aaa you can see in the YouTube vid I am linking. There is also a whistling sound coming from the passenger side of the engine bay at WOT.
First Audi here. Not sure what this is all about.
Looking for any input. I am under warranty until 80K and am going to make an appointment to bring it in for a checkup and oil change.
As well, it does not do this when it is put into S mode.
Thanks guys.

Sorry about the shaky video. Hard to hold the phone steady while I am doing up to 100mph. Btw, it's a US model. Speedo is in MPH on the large numbers.

Hello Chris.
Not sure how much you have had to do with CVT but.... There is only one (1) gear!
From a standing start, if you hold the throttle to the floor, there is no shifting. The computer advances the engine RPM to a high RPM to take advantage of the HP available at high RPM and it then applies the transmission to maintain that RPM while increasing the speed accordingly without lugging the engine down or allowing the engine to overspeed. Again, there is no shifting, just an increasing smooth accelleration to impact or maximum speed.
There is never any shifting, although Audi has put in a program to give an impression of shifting in the sport or +/- modes.
The whissle is the turbocharger spooling up as the exhaust heat increases and the HP increases. The whissle should initially build witht the RPM and as the RPM approaches maximum, the whissle should remain relatively constant because the engine will be at full HP throught the acceleration process. This is better than a geared transmission because the engine RPM is always high and as such, developing high HP. In a geared transmission, the RPM drops as the gear changes and HP is lost until the RPM recovers.
I also have a 2010 CVT 2.0T a5 Cab
Hope this helps.

Re: Shifting issue with CVT when WOT...
Thanks for the response Len. I do understand that the CVT works as you described. What my issue is though, is that in D mode, it does not keep accelerating after that point, whereas in S mode it will. I realize that I'm doing 100mph and all, but it should continue to accelerate and not
Stay up at that high rpm/"low gear" feel should it?
Thanks again for the response, Len. Since it's under warranty I will run it through the dealer to see if they can find out something for me, or talk with the service advisor there as well. If they have anything to add about the issue, I will post it up here.

Sorry, I missed the idea that it tops out at 100, mine doesn't. I didn't notice what was going on on the dash at that point though. I will try to pay attention next time I am able to test that condition but I have to admit that I don't go there unless I am pretty certain about my surroundings.
Let us know what the dealer says.
Is it a USA car, speedo resembles mine.

Yes. USA car. Got up to just over 100 and basically stops accelerating. If I kick the shifter over to Tip mode, it shows the car as being in 3rd. If I paddle shift, the revs drop down a bit and it continues to accelerate. Don't have video of that unfortunately.
Not planning to take it up to that speed often, but had taken a good run down the highway first and was just coming on via the on-ramp.
Will advise as to any insight the dealership has.

Re: Shifting issue with CVT when WOT...
Spoke with the guys at the dealership today. They assured me that what is in the video is normal for a CVT and that I shouldn't worry. I reviewing the end of the video again, it was still accelerating all past 100mph. I just chickened out there, I guess. And not havin driven a CVT vehicle before, I did not realize that at WOT there is no "kick" from shifting gers, as there are no gears.
The guy explained it very well. And all things considered, I thought it reached 100mph pretty quickly.
Thanks for the assist Len. Much appreciated. And your explanation is exactly the way the dealer guys explained it. You were bang on, and it was my lack of knowledge about CVT tech that was causing me to worry.

Hello again Chris.
I am really confused now. I thought paddle shifters were for the 6 speed and 8 speed transmissions? You have paddle shifters? On the steering wheel?
