Magic eye in dash?

Magic eye in dash?
Hi Guys, believe it or not it took me a few years to realize that I have a some sort of magic eye in the dash for the instrument cluster.
The issue is it's working in reverse IMHO, ie the instrument lights come on when I open the door or it's sunny outside and go off when it's dark. It's annoying me.
I think it should be operating in reverse, ie when I go in a tunnel the lights should come on in the cluster and/or when it gets dark.
Has anyone seen such an issue? Could this be reversed?

Re: Magic eye in dash?
Cluster lights go dim in the dark to remind you to turn on the main headlights. BTW - the sensor for the cluster is in the speedometer dial by the 0 marking. Look closely and you should see a small circle.
The sensor you see on top of the dash is for the climate control.
There is a VCDS coding to change this behaviour.

Re: Magic eye in dash?
Thank you very much for the explaination, I guess it's operating like it should.
Yes I did notice it and conducted experiments with my hand covering it and getting the cluster to turn off.
When you say VCDS coding (Sorry I'm a noob) you mean using a VAG type program to change the behavior? Thanks again for your answers.
