Cool Thermostat Sensor??

Yesterday I replaced a leaking "J" plug on my car, to do so I had to remove the thermostat because like many other posts I have found the "J" plug on the 1.8T usually breaks when removing so you have to push it out through the thermostat opening. When I removed the theromostat housing there was an electrical connector on it that I tried to unplug, it ended up breaking off and all I could see was a couple pins that looked like some wires were soldered to, I tried to see what was in the thermostat that could have been connected to the pins (maybe a temp sensor?) but I did not see anything that looked like a sensor. Since I did not have a replacement thermostat housing I put it back on and hoped for the best, I was expecting to see a check engine light since that connector was no longer pluggeg in but the car drove normal with no warning lights....Does anyone know what the connector on thermostat housing is for?
