Strange noise only in first gear?

Strange noise only in first gear?
I just bought this car a week and a half ago(2004 A4 6spd),it has been sitting in my garage until today when I finally got it licensed and on the road, I took it for a spin around the block and noticed that at every start I would hear a noise (almost like the sound of the wheel on wheel of fortune) while taking off in first gear only, as soon as I shift into second gear the noise would dissapear. I test drove the car twice but never noticed this noise-probably because I had all the windows rolled up and it was less noticeable. From what I have read it sounds like it may be a damaged tooth on the first gear???
Has anyone else encountered this problem? any ideas on how much this will cost to repair?
Should I go after the guy that sold me the car to help me out with the repair bill, he obviously knew of this problem when he sold me the car......

Re: Strange noise only in first gear?
Ok, just an update..I took my car out again today to have another listen and I discovered that the sound is only present in first gear while accelerating (the noise increases with speed), if I leave it in first gear with my foot off the gas, clutch up and coast the sound goes away.I have found some older A4 posts that also describe this problem, could it be a bad synchro? anyone else experience a noise in first gear only?

Re: Strange noise only in first gear?
I am currently having the same noise and only happen on first gear. The noise started to happen when I changed my clutch. It's kind of annoying. I even went to the dealer and asked what might be causing the problem and they couldn't tell me anything. if you find out the solution to this annoying sound please do email me.
Thanks,
Mike

Re: Strange noise only in first gear?
Hello Gentlemen,
I too have a similar problem, and ill tell you what it might be.
Either, a broken tooth on your first gear. or your bearing is shot. which causes a whimpy winding noise. while accelerating.
Both stupid problems and costly.
Hope this helps.
