$600?

software is $99. Cable is $100 ish.

anyway, buying 4 of the cheap ones doesn't sound right. It's not rocket science in that cable...it's a SERIAL to USB converter. THAT'S IT.

I heard of one guy going the cheap route and buying it 4 times and then finally forking the money for the real thing. Just buy the original their support and customer service is amazing any issues or questions that I had they diagnosed it for me and helped me out every step of the way. Big props to the people at Ross-Tech I have a whole lot of respect for them and I would not mind paying $600 for the cable with the service that I am getting!!!

I dont know where you got $100 for the cable when someone said it was $16 on ebay a few posts back anyway I paid close to $400 for mine, $389 to be exact... and this is the cable VCDS License with HEX-USB+CAN Interface: Ross-Tech Store it sells for $349 I would pay twice that in how much it has helped out me and the Calgary Audi Club!!! The local dealer charges $130 for a diagnosis and $600 for DRL's I do it for $40 per year. Which are your membership fees. Anyways thats my 2 cents, I went down the right route the first time IMO and I dont regret it one bit. And I like having genuine stuff. Yes it is just a cable...I work with "just a calbe" day in and day out but the quality of the cable and what they use how it effects the signal etc. you dont notice much of the difference but I am sure that mine will last longer then the ebay one as the insualtion is thicker its more rugged and the dogle itself is made of really hard plastic droped it plenty of times and nothing happened to it. At the same time if it werent for Ross-Tech those cheap ebay ones would not exist, so I rather give the money to the original guy and fund him for further progress and research then give it to someone that ripped him off.

Here is a joke.....

look at it as Ebay cable = you driving a Ford , and Ross-Tech Genuine = you driving an Audi with lifetime warranty

hmm...$199. License + USB cable...like I said. I was referring to original RT product being $100 for cable $100 for FULL license. NOT $600!

VCDS License with Reconditioned KEY-USB Interface: Ross-Tech Store

anyway, if you 'work with a cable all day' congrats, but remember, most of us work with other stuff all day and bought the $20 cable for a nice easy way to mod VERY basic stuff on our cars (probably ONCE, and never again) . It's not our job...

If I were to buy a $200+ package to change my door locks, I'd consider myself a spendthrift.

I guess my 07 S4 will have to go back to the dealership, since I'm just worthy of a Ford. boo-hoo.

So you are worthy of an Audi if you purchased that cable! We were talking about the cheap ebay cables for $16 at first, dont change the subject! They do crap out on people big time and mess up some coding due to a faulty signal going through the cable, or reversing the signal strenght back through the cable and loosing it etc. many factors anyway I am not gonna argue the point! In my opinion the Ebay cables are $hit..... if you got the one from R.T. then you get the support. When I looked at adding the window option and helping others out I went for the better cable because I wanted it to last long and the last thing I wanted was to mess up a $35000 dollar car, the dealer charged $130 for the diagnosis which took 5 minutes and I decided 3 of those would pay for the cable. And I planned ot import the car as well and tinker around with it and chip it and tune it with other software so I wanted something reliable other then the ebay cable... the reason I got the $349 on was because it was a Hex-Can- USB cable and that was the most popular one and let me deal with older model cars too and also lets me work on other European cars when I go on vacation back home in europe. So it was an investment that repaid itself over and over now!

So do the right thing and buy the Ross Tech cable and forget ebay.

1move I have $10 that says you're either from Czechoslovakia or Yugoslavia (forgive my 1980s names for the countries...I'm dating myself). AND I bet you have owned a diesel Jetta with lots of miles on it in your lifetime.

Am I close? I have a few friends who you remind me of. Anyway, truce on the cable topic...holy!

I messed around with a knockoff for a while too but at the end of the day I wanted full Ross-Tech support and the reliability of their latest app. What I DON'T want is a dead Audi ECU because I couldn't blow the few hundreds bucks for 100% compatibility.

If you can afford one of these cars you should be able to afford the proper cable. 'Nuff said.

I find it interesting this debate about the merits of the official vs hacked cable, however what I originally read this thread for was to learn just what this device is capable of doing? In additon to these minor tweaks. I was hoping for a list of benefits and feature, some instructions, etc. .. I still have no idea if its worth buying and which I should get...Or just jimmy up this cable...

Ross-Tech: VAG-COM: Interfaces - the full Ross-Tech cable is needed for CAN-Bus vehicles such as the B7 & B8 models. I started with the cheaper eBay cable but there were some things it couldn't adjust/monitor so I went and bought the Ross-Tech version. Read the wiki on the Ross-Tech site to understand all it's capabilities. Main Page - Ross-Tech Wiki

Full cable is well worth the cost IMO.
