PRNDS flashing

Re: PRNDS flashing
Living with this problem since almost an year now, it usually comes (that too not always) when I start the car and the temperature of my car is in between 0-90 i.e. engine has not reached its optimum temperature. for eg. I drove the car for a while and then park it for about 10-15 min. and try to start again. And when the car is heated up, I move it to "P" and the flashing is gone. If I take care of this (letting the car cool down before I restart) then this problem doesn't come for weeks.
Also if I switch off my car with PRNDS flashing in the night, in the morning flashing is still there, remains in R, but as I shift to D, its gone.
I do not feel any power loss as such during the problem, only my RPM is around
1000 instead of around 700 (in netural) and if I press brake it comes down to 700 as normal
I'm not sure about living with this problem, may be I'm killing the gearbox gradually?
any suggestions.

Re: PRNDS flashing
Hi tariqonnet, I am facing exactly the same issue, I have 2003 A4 with multitronic and this problem started from last two weeks, PRND sometimes starts flashing when i drive the car and shift the lever from D to P, if i left the car to cool down and then start the car PRND is still flashing but when i shift the lever to D, flashing is gone. as you mentioned the car is idlesabove 1000 prm, but when i switch the lever to P it comes down to 700 rpm. just wondering if you were able to fix the issue.

Re: PRNDS flashing
Hi, sorry to hear your problem... let me share my experience hope it helps...
I have been living with this problem more than 1.5 years now, until couple of months, problem was exactly as I mentioned in my earlier post, but now its flashing all the time except once the car engine is heated up i.e. after approx. 20 min of driving, I move the gear to P its gone and doesn't come back until car is again cooled down.
TCU needs to be replaced/repaired sooner or later, no other solution..tried to change transmission oil but no help..
watch out, your car may stop reversing at all, in that case you have no other option..
I'm not very eager to repair my car, as the dealer quoted more than $2000 for the repair (we do not have many skilled mechanics outside) and here in Saudi arabia, my car is worth not more than $5500 even if I get it repaired.

Re: PRNDS flashing
Hey, I had this problem with my 99 a4.
It turned out to be transmission multifunction switch, costed about 200 or 300 to have it fix.
I would probably do it myself now, it's not too complicated. Search for DIY and save, good luck

Re: PRNDS flashing
I am having the same issue too. once or twice the reverse gear was not engaged properly. It comes it self and goes it self. No issue what so ever. I went to Toronto to Protech, the guy quoted me 900$ including every thing !

For those with Multitronic problems this is what your gearbox looks like. I have one and I am guessing the contacts build up a sludge with metal particles in it which confuses the sensor. I intend to clean mine myself and filter and reuse the oil as a flushing agent as only half of it comes out when you drain it . After about 3 of these I will replace with new 'expensive' stuff . Have not done it yet so feel free to tell me I'm wrong.

Re: PRNDS flashing
Looks like the edit button disappears pretty damn quick here
Here is another forum dealing with the same issue with some good links
audiworlddotcom/forums/a4-b6-platform-discussion-34/audi-a4-2003-frontrak-b6-cvt-multitronic-oil-fluid-change-flush-2853167/page5/
I can't post links yet so you have to add to the front and change the dot .
