Re: Oil sensor issue - oil sludge? A4 1.8T 2003
i am having the same problem. My Oil sensor light is coming on and beeping.
my question is
Should i buy one from the dealer and have a mechanic install it?
ie is the dealer too expensive for buying parts?

I never go to the Audi dealer to get my parts or repairs. My local mechanic specialized in German cars does the same job for cheaper, and online sellers can get parts cheaper too.

I called the dealer and they told me that they stock the oil sensor for 113.00 and that i wouldnt be able to get it elsewhere
i also called Parts Source and they told me that I must go to the dealer for it.
I will have my mechanic install it.
If you can tell me where I can go to purchase this part (and others) that would be great
Thanks

I find it highly unlikely that all 1.8 T have an oil sensor issue. It must be somwhere else. It is a small engine after all and it is the same as they put into VW and they are problem free. Does the dealer change oil and filter at the same time when they replace oil sensor? Has anybody looked at the oil filter that was replaced. Is it bigger?

he said the filter was ok..it was a bigger one.
i am intrigued that you do not think it is the sensor that is the issue
any suggestions on how i would troubleshoot to determine what the problem is?
i.e oil sensor light coming on and beeping

I will tell you what was happening to me for 3 years.
My mechanic used Synthetic Motul oil on my car. The oil is good untill it overheats. I can never tell when it overheats, but when it does it produces hard deposits all over the engine including the head of the oil sensor. It looks like black concrete. Once I developed this I had the beeping. I changed the practice of adding synthetic oil and I use regular Castrol and Castrol only. I did not have this problem since 2001 so 9 years now.
The only way that I know of, and I used was to change the oil from synthetic to normal Castrol and once Castrol cleaned the sensor the beeping stopped.
You may have not sludge but that hard stuff in the engine that blocks the pressure. The problem is magnified that it is both beeping and flashing so it happens at higway speeds when your engine needs pressure bad.
In my opinion if your oil is nice and clean after 1000 km this is a sign that it is not cleaning your engine so the dirt is being deposited somwhere.
And yes as Mike said - if you are on warranty next time try some different kind of oil that is approved by AUDI and see what happens.
One other thing... Sometimes drivers top up with different brand of oil that does not mix with what is already in the pan. In this case the pressure drop is significant as one type of oil prevents the other in reaching the top of the engine. Your sensor was on the bottom thou, so it does not apply to you.
In general and my opinion the germans are very gasoline, oil and rubber aware after the shortages during WWII that stopped their advance on the world and so they try to conserve it as much as possible. These sensors are designed to last 20 years or so. yet some of them are manufactured in Spain (not bad) Mexico???.. Poland!!!!!! (WHOA), Czech Republic (EYYYYA EYYYYA OOOO) and so on. It is always the best to make sure that the part is made in good old Black Forest.
PS
Do they make AUDI TT in the SKODA factory now?????????????

Although the use of non synthetic oil seemed to have worked for Adam please be aware that non synthetic oil is not approved by Audi. The choice of oil is entirely up to you however lets say your car was under warranty, and I am assuming that a 2002 is no longer covered, than if discovered that you were using non approved oil this may effect warranty.

What i do find interesting is that, I purchased my car brand new and had it serviced at Agincourt Autohaus.
Oil changes were free for first 80kms while under warranty.
While under warrantly, they only used regular oil! That was the spec for the first 3 years.
Recently, My cat converter was malfunctioning and I wondered if the regular oil caused this.
I called audi head office and they said they changed the spec later and this wouldnt have caused the cat converter to break down.
I wonder if I have sludge build up due to regular oil being used in the first 3 years of ownership?
