Are my headlights xenon or halogen? 2004 A4 1.8T Quattro
Hello,
I am new to the site and have read through a ton of A4 threads to get a better feel for what other owners experience with their cars.
I just bought my 2004 A4 1.8T Quattro last week and noticed that it has one halogen and one xenon bulb in it... I found this out because one was higher than the other and I went to adjust the higher one and it would tilt both lights... Then I realized that the light I was seeing was only from the right one as the left light was halogen and barely visible compared the xenon one.
Anyways, I am trying to figure out if the xenon bulb is supposed to be there, or if it should be halogen.
Could someone have a look at my headlight and let me know?
(they are auto leveling headlights as well)
Thanks in advance.

Just realized I can't post pictures yet, but if you go to google and type in " Xenon Headlight Set
Audi B6 A4 Quattro 1.8T " and click the first link, thats what my headlights look like.
Hopefully I can post a picture after a few more posts.
(trying to post link without http, Not sure if this will work: )

Your linked worked fine to show your picture.
I think what you are seeing is normal. For the B6, I think both halogen and Xenon lights used a projector lens for the low beam. The high beam is definitely an H7 halogen bulb with a reflector. When high beam is on, you should also see a blue indicator light come on in the top portion of your instrument cluster.
The one on the left is your low beam; the one on the right is for your high beam. When you adjust the headlight assembly both beams are affected. If the headlight on your drivers side is out of alignment with the passengers side, you will notice a definite difference in the height of the light pattern. It's supposed to be a slight stepped shape; driver's side points slight lower to reduce glare for oncoming traffic. Search for an article by Daniel Stern lighting to learn how to adjust headlights properly.
I would also suggest you do adjustments at night time against a flat surface like a garage door or a shopping mall wall as it's much easier to see how the beam patterns are moving as you adjust the levelling screws.
Pictures from the front with low beam and high beam turned on would help. Also a picture of the beam pattern as seen from the drivers seat with high and low beams turned on.

So it turns out that both of my low beam bulbs were Osram D1S's but they had different part numbers. One looked stock and the other looked to be the "newer" one. So anyways, I ordered up some new 6000k HID bulbs on ebay and should be all set once they come in.

BTW - if you are after brightness (lumens) 4300K is the recommended bulb; higher temp bulbs have reduced lumens, though some prefer the visual effect of the bluer tinges.
