Default This morning my brake lights were on.

Hi Guys,

For the last few days, I've been parking on my drive way. My neighbour just came by at 8:30 this morning ringing my door bell to tell me my brake lights are on. So I go outside and sure enough, they are on. Started up the car no problem, walked around the back and the lights are off. Mind you I did step on the brake pedal when starting the car. What gives? Do I have some kind of bad brake light switch?

BTW, I had my rear brake pads replaced early last week.

Also, I just remembered that I went out to my car last night around 10:30 to get something out of the trunk. At that time, the brake lights were not on. So, they must have come on by themselves sometime during the night. Could a faulty brake light switch turn the lights on when the car is just sitting there?

Bingo. Cheap part, fails often.
Brake pad replacement is most likely just a coincidence.

Cool. Thanks wailshark.

Now here's something strange that I did not mention (I just remembered). I went out to my car last night around 10:30 to get something out of the trunk. At that time, the brake lights were not on. Yeah, it would make sense.. if the switch is faulty, the dead weight of the brake would be enough to activate it. And as a safety feature, brake lights are supposed to turn on even with the key not in.

Okay thanks guys. Looks like it's time for another switch. Hopefully, it won't cost me too much.
