Loud fan...sounds like a jet engine.
Hey all,
Ive seen a few posts on the internet but none with any definite answers. Basically my fan is on all the time and it is super loud. It has affected my gas mileage. It starts up as soon as the car is started, and when i shut it off i can hear it powering down. When the car is running, the fan is very noticeable.
I recently had some minor work done on the car to fix a coolant leak and i *think* it started after this but im not sure. Could there be something blocking the fan/causing it not to work properly? i did a quick check and there is nothing obvious. I rarely run the ac and the weather here in toronto is nowhere near hot. I also got a letter recently about faulty coolant temperature sensors, could a faulty sensor be causing this? My temperature gauge in my dash shows that the engine is cool (in fact it doesnt move and might be broken lol). Any insight would be helpful....i really dont want to take it to a dealership and have them charge me a ridiculous price just for a diagnosis....
Oh yea my car is a 2002 a4 1.8T Quattro

Whoa, I have had the same problem: I had the rear coolant flange replaced back in August because it sprung a nasty leak. At the same time, a new coolant temp sensor was installed on the new flange. weeks later the CEL came on but the car appeared to be running well. The temp gauge was slow as hell to move though. During the last oil change on Nov. 1, the code was cleared without a problem. Days later it came back on again. I should also add that I also experienced the loud fan upon starting the car. Heyguy, you mentioned the ECT sensor. Could you please elaborate?

Thanks Heyguy. I was on another forum and it appears that Audi of America has sent a notice to A4 owners raising awareness about faulty temp sensors. Look into it. Isn't there another temp switch on the car? Mine has been changed but my fan still runs full tilt on ignition.
