First, I use 91 octane fuel in my '09 A4 2.0 TFSI Avant.

The Owners Manual states for the 2.0 TFSI:
Premium unleaded 91 AKI / 95 RON recommended for maximum performance.

The key word here is recommended.....which is different from required....according to Consumer Reports.

I like the way you think.

Has anyone tried 90 octane out of curiosity? Husky sells it for the same price as 87 octane shell gas. I'm sure its not as good 91 octane, but its definately better than 87 i'm sure.

Its 90 because it's an ethanol blend. Ethanol has a higher octane rating, but it produces less energy. You probably won't see much of a performance difference between a 87 regular and a 90 ethanol blend

While it does produce less energy per litre burned VS conventional fuel, your car will adjust the ammount of fuel it injects to counterbalance. You should only notice a slight fuel efficiancy drop with no performance drop due to the ethanol content. Even regular gasoline will vary slightly in energy content from different suppliers (Esso VS Shell VS Petro-canada) or during different seasons (i.e. winter with the de-icers and de-waxers and whatnot that are added). As such, vehicles engine management systems are designed to cope. The only time this would be an issue would be if you were saturateing your injectors with regular fuel (i.e. used them to their maximum capacity) and then switched to a high blend of ethanol as your engine management would not be able to cope.

However, it does still have an octane rating of 90, which should mean that timing is retarded signifigantly less VS 87 octane as it will knock less during high load driving.

Yes, I agree that if knocking was an issue with 87, then 90 with the ethanol blend would work better. I've run 87 a couple times in my car (not by choice) and I never experienced any knocking. That's dealing with a static CR however. The turbo cars may have issues when running at higher boost pressures. When I say boost pressures I mean in the stock range. Anyone who is chipped and trying to run 87, well you're just silly. I assume that no one here would do that.

you bought a European car and want to cheap out on gas? do you cheap out on engine oil as well? Tires?
Use whats recommended 91+ and synthetic oil if you care about the car and the longevity of it. It will save you $ in the long run in damage that you will do to the car

I'm getting kind of tired of the "If you buy an Audi you should be able to afford"... stuff. A lot of people's financial situations have changed over the past year. When you go from financially stable to unstable you HAVE TO start looking at options for saving money, as little as they may be, it all adds up. As for selling, the used car market sucks, your looking at well below the bluebook value most of the time seeing as its so easy to buy a new car right now.

Anyway, this thread should be destroyed.

Where in the GTA can you get higher than 91 octane? I'd love to try some ridiculously high octane fuel.

I've swear by Shell's 91. Been using it since I got my A4 and used 87 on my Mazda 3 when I had it last month. Not sure if it was just the bright yellow signs calling to me, or the wonderful advantage of getting Airmiles, or just that their gas stations always seem a lot less ghetto...

I used ESSO on my last fill up.... (was the only one gas station around at the time and I was running low). Can't wait till my tank is empty so I can feed my beast it's meat!
