Default 2003 A4: Tires/Rims

First, I love my Audi.

I'm trying to make sense of tires and rims. My 2003 A4 has stock 16 inch rims with the original 215/55R/16 tires.

I would like to either upgrade my current tires to decent snows and then shop for new performance rim/rubber for spring, or;

purchase a set of rim/snows for the upcoming winter and simply buy new tire for the existing rims for spring.

The TireRack suggests 205/60R/16 as the only real replacement tire for my winter needs, but it really limits my options in terms of tire availability. Has anyone tried anything else? I'm thinking of either sticking with the stock size for winters or finding the recommended narrower size if a deal is found.

I haven't noticed too many A4s with 17 or 18 inch rims, and don't think I'd go that route, unless there are significant performance gains. Keeping the 16 inch rim with a low profile performance tire is most ideal. Any other thoughts/experience?

Geove,

There are many A4's out there that have 17" (Sport Package) and even 18" stock wheel (Ultra Sport Package). There really isn't any major significant gains going to a larger rim other than more/better traction during the spring/summer months etc. and the look.

If you ask me its better to have your winters on your 16" and upgrade your rims with tires or as you mentioned keep your 16" stock rims and keep swapping the tires (not ideal........but very possibly)

have you check out any of the Toyo snow tires? I bought a set for my old car (mk3 Jetta) they were amazing.

TOYO SNOWPROX S952 is the winter performance tire...

Yes, agreed that there are 17" and 18" packages. I guess I haven't noticed them a whole lot. I've had mine since Aug. I'll keep my eyes open to compare the larger rims. Thanks for your advice.

I've looked at so many tires the last few days, I feel like the Michelin man. I found a dealer in Woodbridge selling the Cooper Arctic Claw for $77 a tire + the usual balance, install, and disposal. Seemed like a decent, low end tire, but figured they'd do for a couple, maybe three seasons until I decide my next vehicle.

Thanks for the Toyo link. It's actually one brand I haven't looked at...yet.

Cheers,
George
