The engine is built for premium. It can run on other octane levels but not as well. I always use premium.

read the label on your gas tank cover. premium = 91.

But you can also read the manual and minimum fuel is 87.
Note: For best peformance result used 91.

I have been an owner of an A4 2006 2.0T for 3 years and I have been using regular unleaded gaz (87) without any problem so ever.
It all depends how you drive but I can assure you that mine has been doing quite well ( published on another post) I average 8.1L/100km
10 in city, less than 7 on highway at 110 km. I never abuse my car or the engine. These new FSI car are wonderful for adjusting the timing.

You can read many forum on gaz and better milleage for higher octane, I did not notice any, and if you do, the higher price will reduce the benefit, again if any.

I must admit for better performance, higher octane will give you the power you are looking for but for average city and highway driving, I am looking for some real result. My own experience here, that's it.

I do not presume to know everything.

I am looking forward to see if the new 2009 will work well with 87.

Personally, you should use nothing less than 91......If you can do 95 that is even better. It will run properly and smoother. Take care.
P.S. I drive an A4 and when you open up the door to fill up for gas, it states right on there to use nothing less than 91.

There is a post here where someone is talking about the new Shell Nitrogen.

Curious to see if we really get more milleage.
CNW Group | SHELL CANADA LIMITED | Shell Rolls Out New Shell Nitrogen Enriched Gasolines With Free Fill-Ups

I am looking to try it.

Any other comment welcome.

Similar to everyone, I use Chevron 91 or whenever possible 94. Sometimes Petro-Canada 91. Hahaha, when I travel, I make sure either a Chevron or Petro-Canada is on route.
