Thinking of buying...but...Problems?? Belt,trans,elec,etc??
Hello All,
I am new to this forum.
I am a veteren of VW's as I have had a few Golfs. I currently run a civic...dare I say it...well with the price of gas...fuel efficiency sure has its attractions.
I want to buy an Audi A4...perhaps a 1997 or 1998. I like the styling and have always dreamed of owning one. I am going to go for the 1.8T...now the hard part...
Reading on the NET, all I see are problems and countless bad reviews of these cars. Everything from transmission problems, to timing belt issues to electrical woes...
This all sucks *** because the car I was eyeing was recently sold due to my indecision!
So if someone could please set the record straight...or at least give me some perspective, it would be greatly apreciated.
I had a 1991 golf where I changed every ing part on the car...talk about a Lemon, this is why I went to Honda and haven't had a single problem...so now thinking of venturing back to the VW/Audi world, I am slightly skeptical.
Hoping the good outweights the bad...please help

Hey, I'm also thinking of buying an A4 in June. I've read that there are problems with control arms up untill the redesign for 2002 models. I'd also like to know what some of the common problems are and what would be an avg maintainance cost for a year?

As long as you maintain ur car with the regular things like, check your hoses, seals, oil, and fluid levels things should last well. If you start to hear a squeeking or cracking get it checked out right away, dont wait it out. Ive owned my car for over a year and the only problems ive had so far were struts, and valve cover gasket. The struts were very uncommon and they only needed to be replaced because the car was stored for a year or so. The valve cover gasket is a common problem in the A4s but it is very inexpensive to fix and once it is fixed your fine for a long while.
I would reccomend the A4 to anyone who can afford the insurance prices and full synthetic oil. I would definately recommend buying with low kilometres!!
PS: ive got an a4 for sale if your interested https://www.audiforum.ca/viewtopic.php?t=183
