Yeah, I will have to find some time and see what the temperature gauge does over a longer period - again, I never really get it hot on a regular basis.

It makes sense cause the longer drive after I first posted was about 25min and I just remember thinking when I finally got home that it was still cool in the car - eventhough the heat had been blowing the entire ride home.

Even this morning on the way in to work, the defroster was blowing warmer air, but the car temperature never really made it up much past 70c - but agian, its only about 5 min - and were at about -5c here right now.

Ok, so heres an update...
I actually had a situation today where I was driving for a bit and sitting in a parking lot for a while also... And it would appear that thermostat is a more likley culprit.

Drove a short distance to the location with hardly any temperature readings...
Parked and sat on the phone for 5min - temp up to 90C
Drove back to my office - Temp starting at 90C and dropped to 75-80C

Had some heat, and had some better heat while sitting still...

Engine just not getting up to temperature... I sure hope that thermostat "removal from the bottom" thing works...

Ok, so I found this great video on Youtube doing the timing belt, water pump, and T-stat on a 99 A4 2.8...

YouTube - HOW TO REPLACE A THERMOSTAT & WATER PUMP Audi Quattro

I dont think you can get at that T-stat without removing everything... I might be wrong, but wow... (Its towards the last 1/4 of the video)

Anyone have any thoughts on this?
Anyone seen one of these apart?

That is scary...

Edit: Just noticed that is acually the V6 from an A6 - but I cant imagine that they are much different...

Wait with this thermostat removal and 7 hour labour.
It could be your gauge not working due to dirt in the system.
There is another gauge that is digital. Here it is how to do it.

1. Press Recirculation and shortly after arrow up
2. Press (PLUS) until you see 51C
3. Press Recirculation again

Now you see digital temperature.

I am attaching my gauges 5 min after cold start. The digital gauge is at 90 and the other one at 70. The digital is right.

I think you should do another rad flush and this time remember to rev the engine at 4000 rpm when the system is unplugged. The pump wil generate pressure and spit out the dirt out. The dirt sits at the bottom.

Remember not to use Prestone antifreeze.

The reason that you have more heat is that it takes some time before the air in the system escapes. In my case it took 2 weeks for the system to come to complete normal.

Alright, I did that and the temperature seems to be 90C after a few minutes of warming up - based on code 51 though the diagnostics... but it doesnt make sense.

I thought code 49 had to do with the coolant temperature in a different location cause it seemed to more closely follow what my gauge was doing - but it says that it has something to do with speed compensation... that doesnt add up.

Anyone trust this digital number over the gauge?

This is good info!
So we know that your thermostat is OK. I flush my rad every year needed or not.

I would add 0.5 liter of vinegar to your system and drive with it for two days or so. At first you will notice increase in heat and than decrease in heat and at that time you know that vinegar did it's job. Flush again and remember to bring the rpms to 3000 once the system is opened. This will throw away the dirt.

Vinegar is similar to CLR in terms of the active molecule H+, yet it does not have phosphorus that would be left behind.

Ok, so it was a nice cold day on Saturday and I turned on the diagnostic mode to see what was happening with the temperature in the rad...

It sat at 27C for quite a while, then after several minutes of driving it started to climb and made its way up to 90C again... I am guessing the reason it sat at 27C was the wait for the thermostat to open and start the full circulation.

Now try code 49c while driving

I have done 49C and it never goes over 71C or so - most of the time it sits around 65-68.
As I mentioned before, I wondered if this was an alternate coolant location - but it says online that 49C is:

Malfunction counter for speedometer (vehicle speed) signal

Doesnt sound related to coolant temp at all...

Vehicle speed is code 17c.

51c is maximum temperature the car achieved and it does not go down ever, it goes up and stays that way.

49c is reading from analog temperature gauge, so it is a copy what the analog shows.

Your coolant achieves 90 degrees and this is a good sign. I still think you need more flushing or maybe professional flush at the Mechanic's Shop.

What coolant are you using? Sometimes when people use Prestone with additives these additives cause problem as they react with everything inside the engine and the result is air bubbles in the system so the coolant does not flow.

I flush my system twice ayear needed or not once in April and once in September.
