Default headlight issues , just happened

i just went to do a quick run to the store and didn't know it but my headlights weren't working... a cop pulled me over, he passed me then turned around and hit the red and blues. he said that the rear lights were working fine but my headlights were off.

did i quick search on the net and seen there is a recall on my model for the ignition having some kind of switch problem not engaging the lights. my fog lights (switch on the dash) work so i ended up driving home using those.

has anyone else had this problem and is there a quick work around other than the fog light thing until i know for sure what is causing the issue ?

any help would be appreciated.

oh shoot ... it was dark when i was typing and hit the 8 instead of the 9.

it's a 1996 Audi A4 Quattro

dang ... that's funny, at that year it would have been one of those crank to start jobbies.
