it is not on the top of the tranny... the fill hole is on the side, (drivers side) right by where the axle is attached.

Tip: Make sure that you can crack the fill hole before you drain the oil

Many guys swear by GM Syncromesh for curing 2nd gear grinds. I've never had a bad grind, but I usually Motul or Redline gearbox oils.

thanks for advice. I've changed the oil today and it is better. You can change to second without grind up to 20 mph. Above that it is a bit hard. Will check the links tomorrow and make sure they have plenty of lube on it. Otherwise, will drive it as it is until second hand tranny is available unless somebody has any other suggestion

That's great! What ATF brand did you go with?

Just to clarify a gear box, differential, or manual transmission all use gear oil and an automatic uses ATF or automatic transmission fluid. Gear oil is much thicker than ATF and the two are not comparable so gear oil for manual transmissions and differentials and ATF for automatic transmissions. Because this thread is about manual transmissions they are referring to gear oil and not ATF.

I've used just non-branded semi-synthetic as per AUDI recommendation. Audi here is Derby UK advice me to put semi rather then full synthetic as it is 5 gear manual.
