gearbox oil
hi
I've got A4 tdi 1998 manual with crunchy second gear. Thought may try to top up oil in gearbox.
question is - what oil? Also, there is on left side of the box looking at it with opened bonnet something which looks where oil should be poured in. Is that correct?
had to replace battery due to very cold weather here in UK. My stereo displays now SAFE. guess it needs code. Called dealer - they want £ 40 for it! grrrrrrr cheaper to get another stereo

Re: gearbox oil
40 Quids for codes, that's ridiculous! I would check with another dealer. Good luck!

Re: gearbox oil
If second gear is crunching then it typically indicates a worn second gear syncro ring which can do this when abused. The safest bet for gear oil is the factory stuff which works really well in most conditions. What ever product you decide to use it must be synthetic and the weight must be 75W/90 and it must be GL4 spec or you can damage the transmission. I have used Royal Purple and factory synthetic and I could not tell the difference but both were the right weight and spec so it will work properly.
I'm not really sure what you are asking here but the fill for the transmission if it is manual is on the side case just by the driveshaft output flange for the front wheel. There are a number of resivours by the front of the motor but they are not for the transmission.

Re: gearbox oil
thank for detail reply. The reason I thought it may need top-up is because on first moving is better until oil s around. Is there a dipstick to measure the level then?
If it is synchro it may be easier to replace the box then.

Re: gearbox oil
as far as i know, you just fill the box until the oil is at the level of the fill hole (while cold). you will need a hose and a funnel in order to do it properly, and (i think) a 17 mm hex wrench.

Re: gearbox oil
thanks....it looks like there is a little plate on the top covering the hole with (probably) 17 mm hex. will try when weather gets better. for now it it will be 1st then 3rd!

Re: gearbox oil
This thread may help a little, there are a number of different threads kicking around that would help.... Audi area: Audi B5. B5 5 spd tranny fluid change Check the level first, that can cause this issue for sure. I would also check to make sure the shifter is not worn and the bushings are in good shape because this can do it as well. You can check and make sure it is aligned as well because wear and or adjustment can cause this. Try double-clutching and see if this reduces the crunching at all which tends to help especially when cold. Once it comes to opening the transmission up it would probably be easier to find a used transmission as long as you know it is in better shape.
