Default gearbox oil

hi

I've got A4 tdi 1998 manual with crunchy second gear. Thought may try to top up oil in gearbox.

question is - what oil? Also, there is on left side of the box looking at it with opened bonnet something which looks where oil should be poured in. Is that correct?

had to replace battery due to very cold weather here in UK. My stereo displays now SAFE. guess it needs code. Called dealer - they want £ 40 for it! grrrrrrr cheaper to get another stereo

Welcome Google44! First off, the answer to you question lies within your call sign. Google is our friend and searches through them are free!!! Seriously, a "crunchy" second gear engagement could be a sign of your synchros being out of whacked! I'm not sure sure where else your tranny grinds but usually I would check on the clutch first before assuming anything else within the transmission. Check the level, smell and viscosity of the ATF first before simply "topping it up"!

As far as ATF brand goes, some swear by Royal Purple. Some say to stick with OEM and some even say to put whatever is cheapest and drive without worries! It all depends on what it is you wish to put in there, how much you're willing to spend and how you expect it to perform. A lot of it might depend on availability, cost and even performance gains (?) that you might expect out of whatever brand ATF you go with. Keep this in mind though, overfilling ATF in your tranny WILL make you tranny perform poorly and even cause it to run like there are more problems. There's a reason why there are level marks!

40 Quids for codes, that's ridiculous! I would check with another dealer. Good luck!

If second gear is crunching then it typically indicates a worn second gear syncro ring which can do this when abused. The safest bet for gear oil is the factory stuff which works really well in most conditions. What ever product you decide to use it must be synthetic and the weight must be 75W/90 and it must be GL4 spec or you can damage the transmission. I have used Royal Purple and factory synthetic and I could not tell the difference but both were the right weight and spec so it will work properly.

I'm not really sure what you are asking here but the fill for the transmission if it is manual is on the side case just by the driveshaft output flange for the front wheel. There are a number of resivours by the front of the motor but they are not for the transmission.

thank for detail reply. The reason I thought it may need top-up is because on first moving is better until oil s around. Is there a dipstick to measure the level then?

If it is synchro it may be easier to replace the box then.

as far as i know, you just fill the box until the oil is at the level of the fill hole (while cold). you will need a hose and a funnel in order to do it properly, and (i think) a 17 mm hex wrench.

This thread may help a little, there are a number of different threads kicking around that would help.... Audi area: Audi B5. B5 5 spd tranny fluid change Check the level first, that can cause this issue for sure. I would also check to make sure the shifter is not worn and the bushings are in good shape because this can do it as well. You can check and make sure it is aligned as well because wear and or adjustment can cause this. Try double-clutching and see if this reduces the crunching at all which tends to help especially when cold. Once it comes to opening the transmission up it would probably be easier to find a used transmission as long as you know it is in better shape.

I've found on web picture of A4 manual gearbox which looks like mine. Is this (in red) where oil should go?t If no dipstick on it do I feel it up to the top?

No, that is not where you fill the transmission to as it would be far too much gear oil and you blow the gear oil out of the seals and vents. This link shows how to fill it and where roughly the fill hole is.... AudiWorld Tech Articles With the car sitting on level ground the oil should be level with the bottom of the upper fill hole as shown in the thread above. You will need to pump it into the transmission or squeeze the container to get it in there.
