Re: Engine swap
Rebuild your 1.8T! There are plenty of people running around with 500+wHP in the 1.8T, and it can still be pretty drivable at those levels. Mine will be somewhere in the 450-500wHP range depending on how far I want to go. It's around 400wHP right now (once I get the tuning all sorted), and it is very drivable - to the point that I think I should have just went with a bigger turbo right off the bat.
That said, there are a ton of engines that pretty much just drop into the B5, although you will have to deal with electronics, cluster, correct bell-housings, etc. The 1.8T is going to pretty much the cheapest route for lots of power. If you want just a moderate upgrade, a stock 2.7TT, or 24-valve 2.8 or 3.2 VR6 are good options; although, you can get that sort of power out of the 1.8T with just a couple of bolt-ons.
