If you have ever taken a turbo apart you would be amazed that they last as long as they do. The KO3 is pretty easy to rebuild. I have done three of them. Most premature turbo failure is related to oil quality and not giving a cool down period after driving. The oil can actually burn in the bearing area and on the turbo shaft if it is too hot when you turn it off (some oils better than others). Good synthetic oils, good filters, and a turbo timer will extend the life of your turbo. Other than that 'over boost' conditions and high egt's wreck turbos too. That is usually from poorly matched custom tunning.
As for the waste gate not working, if it is that, thats not turbo failure. There is a boost pot with a small arm that actuates a small flap valve in the turbo exhaust housing. Sometime the valve can stick. Sometimes the boost pot needs replacing. It does not mean turbo failure, just some maintenance.

I get that it's great in the sort term, but some of us like to enjoy the car over a period of time.
I doubt there is a difference, but there are a lot of different engine codes out there. The only way to know for sure is to compare the part numbers for crank, rods, bearings, pistons, oil squirters, and oil pump. I would not be concerned with running a Audi A4 1.8T at 225HP for the life of the engine.
