It is your master cylinder. There is no quick fix for it. You need to get a new one and replace it. There is no leak because it is all happening inside your brake system.
You did not replace your brake fluid every year.

Does sound like you have a potential leak somewhere. Check the fluid level as well check the flex lines going to the brakes. If it is the flex lines it is a relative inexpensive fix and something you can do yourself with some instruction.

Have someone or yourself look under the car at the front while someone applies the brakes. Check the ground where the car is parked.

I would start with what Mikeh said. Yes it could be your master cylinder but start with the small steps. Follow each brake line, have someone pumping while your listening for that sound you say you hear. Check for cracks on the flex hoses. If no leaks and you happen to hear that sound right at your master, then it could be master! But then again, if the fluid is not disappearing, then it could even be the brake booster.

Your master cylinder is a pipe with pistons in it. When you slam it or pump it they will catch pressure and than they are loose inside so they feel like clutch.
Forget brake lines.
If it was brake lines you would lose brake fluid and your brake fluid reservoir would be empty right away.

In addition to the master cylinder, I'd also check out the slave cylinder - look for leaks from the slave and/or the bottom of the bell housing. Whatever you find out, please post the results so future searches will benefit from your information.

Was it a rear caliper? Come to think of, my buddy had the same issue.. Couldn't get any brake pressure and had spongy. We bled it over and over again thnking it was air in the line.. The caliper seemed to work.. I actually was leading to the point i thought it was master.. Turned out to be a bad rear caliper... Changed it, all issue went away.. Why I didn't think of this I don't know.....
